Myanmar’s Political Drama – What Episode Are You Watching Now?

The Irrawaddy
Aung Zaw
29 January 2021
Former Myanmar military dictator Gen. Ne Win

Late on the evening of March 1, 1962, General Ne Win was among the honored guests at a Chinese ballet performance in Yangon. The general enjoyed a drink as he took in the show. Guests recalled seeing the general and his bodyguards return home soon after the performance ended.

But this relaxed scene was a façade. In the early hours of March 2, troops dispatched by the general arrived at the residences of government leaders and detained them. At 8:50 a.m. he went on the air to announced a military takeover of the government. Not even Ne Win’s close subordinates—including Brigadier General Aung Gyi, who would become the No. 2 in the Revolutionary Council formed shortly after the coup—had prior knowledge of the power grab.

Myanmar military allays coup fears, says it will protect constitution

YANGON (Reuters) - Myanmar’s military said on Saturday it would protect and abide by the constitution and act according to law, a move that could allay concerns that the armed forces might attempt to seize power.

The statement comes a day after United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and Western embassies in Myanmar expressed serious concerns about the possibility of army intervention in Myanmar, a country ruled by the military for 49 years after a 1962 coup.

The military, known as the Tatmadaw, said recent remarks by its commander-in-chief, Senior General Min Aung Hlaing, about abolishing the constitution had been misinterpreted.

“The Tatmadaw is protecting the 2008 constitution and will act according to the law,” it said. “Some organisations and media assumed what they want and wrote as Tatmadaw will abolish the constitution.”

Myanmar's ruling NLD party says military statement 'suitable explanation'

THE Star ONLINE
Saturday, 30 Jan 2021

YANGON (Reuters) - Myanmar's ruling National League for Democracy Party (NLD) on Saturday said it accepted a military statement on the situation in the country as a suitable explanation, after the armed forces said it would protect and follow the constitution.

Myo Nyunt, spokesman for Aung San Suu Kyi's ruling party, which won a November election in a landslide, told Reuters the party wanted the military to be an organisation "that accepts people's desire regarding the election".

YANGON: More than a dozen embassies, including the US and EU delegations, on Friday urged Myanmar to “adhere to democratic norms”, joining the United Nations in a chorus of international concern about a possible military coup.

Political tensions eased slightly on Friday when the Supreme Court postponed considering allegations of electoral misconduct by President Win Myint and election commission chairman Hla Thein.

The submissions filed by the military-linked Union Solidarity and Development Party (USDP) would be “reserved for judgement", the court said.

Bangladesh sends more Rohingya refugees to remote, flood-prone island

January 29, 2021

DHAKA (Reuters) - Bangladesh moved another group of Rohingya Muslims on Friday to a remote island in the Bay of Bengal, despite concerns over the risk of storms and floods lashing the site, even as some refugees despaired of finding solutions to their plight.

The densely-populated south Asian country wants to transfer to the island a tenth of the 1 million refugees living in ramshackle border camps after they fled violence in neighbouring Myanmar.

“What options do we have? How long can we live in the crowded camps under tarpaulins?” asked Mohammed Ibrahim, 25, as he sailed to the island of Bhasan Char, to which some of his relatives have also been moved.

In the final weeks and months of Donald Trump’s presidency, the State Department took some steps that are likely to be reversed. President Joe Biden’s administration is now reviewing these last-minute actions, such as designating the Houthi movement in Yemen a terrorist organization and imposing new sanctions on Iranian leaders and organizations, with a red marker in hand.

One 11th-hour policy change, however, may be here to stay: the designation of China’s repression of Muslim Uighurs in Xinjiang province as genocide. At his confirmation hearing last week, and in his first press briefing this week, Secretary of State Antony Blinken agreed that what China’s government has done to the Uighurs was genocide.
