The day dawned bright and clear as a 36-member delegation from Myanmar arrived at Teknaf, stepping off of the boat and into the fray of repatriation discussions. Their brief stop at the Teknaf-Myanmar Transit Jetty Canteen served as little more than a stage for orchestrated camaraderie, captured in photographs with the Bangladesh Refugee Relief and Repatriation Commission (RRRC) officials and Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) personnel, before they boarded buses emblazoned with the insignia of the Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency.

A group of 27 members visited several villages built in Maungdaw district, but to return to Myanmar they demanded security guarantees and citizenship. The pilot project, supported by Beijing, plans to involve at least 1,100 refugees. Previous attempts have failed due to fears of a resurgence of violence. 

Cox's Bazar (AsiaNews) - A 27-member delegation travelled to Burma's Rakhine State in recent days to assess the repatriation of the Rohingya from the Cox's Bazar refugee camp that is home to around one million of them, most of whom fled persecution by the army in 2017.

With China's support, Bangladesh and Myanmar are trying to implement a pilot project to begin repatriating the Muslim minority before the monsoon season, hoping that the Rohingya who have visited Rakhine will convince others to return.

The Rohingya continue to face a genocide that puts their very survival at risk, the Burmese Rohingya Organisation UK (BROUK) said in a new report released 2 November.

The International Court of Justice (ICJ) ordered provisional measures to prevent ongoing genocide against the Rohingya minority in Myanmar. However, a new report by the Burmese Rohingya Organisation UK exposes how the Burmese military and other organisations are ignoring the provisional measures and that genocide is ongoing. It is the responsibility of the United Nations Security Council to uphold the ruling of the UN court, but it is failing to do so.

In a significant development, Myanmar's National Unity Government has announced drafting a new constitution and committed to ensuring citizenship and fundamental rights of all ethnic groups, including the Rohingyas.

It also pledged to repatriate Rohingyas from Bangladesh and other neighbouring countries, revoke the controversial 1982 Citizenship Law and National Verification Card, and invite them to join the shadow government in overthrowing the military junta.

"We invite Rohingyas to join hands with us and with others to participate in this Spring Revolution against military dictatorship in all possible ways," said a statement by the National Unity Government (NUG) Thursday.

The NUG, Myanmar's shadow government in exile, was formed by the ousted parliamentarians of National League of Democracy (NLD) in early April, more than two months after the military took control of the Southeast Asian country, alleging gross anomalies in the November 2020 elections. The NLD had won the election and was in the process of forming a government.

Yangon, Myanmar - When a team of top Myanmar officials met Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh's Cox's Bazar over the weekend, they handed out flyers aimed at persuading members of the persecuted minority to return home two years after fleeing a brutal military crackdown in 2017.

With its happy cartoon figures and its promise of a return "to normal life," the brochure paints a rosy picture for refugees who agree to be repatriated to Buddhist-majority Myanmar on the government's terms.
