The dehumanization of Muslim communities across the world is the tragedy of our time, says the artist

Bangladeshi artist Fawaz Rob’s art work on the plight of Myanmar’s displaced citizens, Rohingyas, has been voted the best entry among all participants at the PenhArt International exhibition.

Jurors and audience voted his art "Long Walk Home" to be the best among 80 participants from all over the world, including France, Japan, the USA, and the UK.

“I’m very delighted to receive this international award. An artist has the responsibility to stand up against the evil of his era,” said Fawaz Rob.

Swe Win, editor-in-chief of Myanmar Now, to Receive 2021 Shorenstein Journalism Award

The Walter H. Shorenstein Asia-Pacific Research Center (APARC) has awarded Burmese journalist Swe Win the 2021 Shorenstein Journalism Award.

An investigative journalist and human rights defender, Swe Win is the co-founder and editor-in-chief of Myanmar Now, an independent news agency that produces features, analysis and investigative reports on life in the country in both Burmese and English.

Presented annually by APARC, the Shorenstein award is conferred upon a journalist who has contributed significantly to a greater understanding of Asia through outstanding reporting on critical issues affecting the region. Swe Win will receive the award in fall quarter 2021.

Throughout his journalistic career, Swe Win has focused on underreported cases involving physical injury, wrongdoing and miscarriage of justice in Myanmar. Under his leadership, Myanmar Now has gained recognition for its in-depth, unflinching reports of crimes against the Rohingya and spotlights on the lives of

In Orlando von Einsiedel’s new documentary short Lost and Found a young girl named Dokana, separated from her family, waits patiently in hopes her mother will soon appear. As the hours pass the only sign of her mounting anxiety is the tears that brim in her luminous eyes.

Dokana is one of tens of thousands of children living in the world’s largest refugee camp, located in Bangladesh across the border from Myanmar. The camp is a makeshift home to the Rohingya minority who have been chased from their native Myanmar in a brutal campaign of ethnic cleansing.

City of London U-turns over decision to strip Aung San Suu Kyi of freedom award

The City of London Corporation has U-turned on an earlier decision to strip Aung San Suu Kyi of her honorary freedom award over her failure to condemn the ongoing violence against the Rohingya people in Myanmar.

The Corporation’s freedom applications committee today decided that Suu Kyi’s honorary freedom – the highest honour the Corporation can bestow upon an individual – should be suspended rather than revoked, despite a vote from councillors earlier in the year calling for it to be removed.

Reuters Journalists Jailed in Myanmar to Receive U.N. Press Freedom Prize

Two Reuters journalists who are currently serving seven-year prison sentences in Myanmar are to be awarded a prize for press freedom by the U.N.’s cultural organization.

The 2019 UNESCO/Guillermo Cano Press Freedom Prize, which honors the defense and promotion of press freedom, is being awarded to Wa Lone and Kyaw Soe Oo as a tribute to their courage and commitment to freedom of expression, according to a press release from UNESCO. The two journalists had been working on stories about a military crackdown and alleged human rights violations in Rakhine state in Myanmar when they were arrested. They were also named as TIME’s Person of the Year, along with three other journalists and a news organization, last December.

Bangladeshi lawyer gets US award for advocating Rohingya rights

Razia Sultana, a Bangladeshi lawyer and advocate for the rights of the Rohingya, will receive the 2019 International Women of Courage Awards in Washington on Thursday.

Sultana is one of 10 “extraordinary” women from around the world who will receive the award this year at the US Department of State in a ceremony hosted by Secretary of State Pompeo, the embassy in Dhaka said in a Facebook post.

First Lady Melania Trump will deliver special remarks on the occasion.

The US embassy has sent its “heartfelt congratulations” to Sultana.

Rohingya-born Bangladeshi citizen Razia Sultana has been awarded the United States’ International Women of Courage (IWOC) Award for her work with Rohingya refugees.

She is among the 10 extraordinary women from around the world who will be honoured this year, said a press release from the State Department of United States issued today.
