Protests against the February 1 military coup, which ousted Aun San Suu Kyi, continue in Myanmar despite an increasingly brutal crackdown. At the same time there are signs that widespread public resentment against the country’s Muslim Rohingya minority may be softening, writes Dominik Muller

‘YOU messed with the wrong generation’ is one of the popular slogans chanted by many of the young people who have been demonstrating in Myanmar for weeks. ‘My ex is bad, but military is worse’ or ‘I don’t want dictatorship, I just want boyfriend’ are just a few more of the phrases on signs held up by the young generation. After all, their protest also takes aim at a conservative social order represented by the generals and many Buddhist monks.

In an exclusive interaction, Maung Zarni said Myanmar was taking advantage of strategic rivalry between China and India

Maung Zarni, 56, scholar and activist, known for his opposition to the violence in Myanmar and his support to the Rohingya population said the Burmese military was taking advantage of strategic rivalry between China and India and blamed genocide of Rohingya to an institutional hate campaign.

Born in a Burmese Buddhist family, Zarni said a campaign of ignorance was manufactured in his country through schools, mass media, and Buddhist organizations against Rohingya, which eventually culminated in the genocide.

It’s time for us to embrace the idea that you can wear a beard, kurta or hijab, and have a Muslim name, and still be fully Burmese.

ONE OF Burma’s most prominent monks, Sitagu Sayadaw, once observed that Muslims are “guests” and Buddhists are “hosts”, and that “the guests must obey the hosts”. Similarly, I have heard Buddhists say that Muslims in Burma (a name I use in preference to Myanmar) need to respect Buddhist culture and “assimilate” into it.

Reflection of exemplary religious harmony in Bangladesh
Bangladesh has yet again proven that people belonging to any religion are not harmed in a backlash to torture and oppression faced by Muslims and others in neigbouring countries.

The latest unfolding Rohingya crisis situation that began in late August 2017, makes this amply clear.

Brother of the military leader of the Arakan Army (Aa) among detained.  The armed group is fighting for greater autonomy in the Rakhine and Chin states.  Also known as Arakan, the territory is at the center of world attention for the Rohingya crisis.  But the clashes between Aa and government troops this year have already caused 35,000 displaced people.

Singapore (AsiaNews / Agencies) - The Singaporean authorities have arrested six citizens of Myanmar, accused of mobilizing support for armed violence against the Naypyidaw government.

The Interior Ministry of the city state said yesterday evening that the group had "organized and mobilized" members of the Burmese community in Singapore to support the Arakan Army (Aa).

The members of the armed group belong to the ethnic minority Rakhine (or arakanese) which, of Buddhist religion, constitutes about 4% of the Burmese population.

GINTOTA, Sri Lanka — The Buddhist abbot was sitting cross-legged in his monastery, fulminating against the evils of Islam, when the petrol bomb exploded within earshot.

But the abbot, the Venerable Ambalangoda Sumedhananda Thero, barely registered the blast. Waving away the mosquitoes swarming the night air in the southern Sri Lankan town of Gintota, he continued his tirade: Muslims were violent, he said, Muslims were rapacious.
