14 Rohingyas, 2 suspected traffickers held

The Rapid Action Battalion detained 14 Rohingya people, including three women and eight children, and arrested two suspected human traffickers at Dakshin Surma in Sylhet on Sunday morning.

The detained Rohingya are Zahura Begum, 30, Nur Ayesha Begum, 35, Khoshnama Begum, 18, Abdur Rahman, 29, M Siraj, 20, Jubayer Ahmad Sayed, 20, Syed Noor, 16, M Idris, 12, M Junaid, 10, M Yunus, 8, M Mustafa, 4, Mustafizur Rahman, 11, Saidur Rahman, 9, and Azizur Rahman, 4, said the battalion.

8 More Rohingyas From Myanmar Held In Assam

Guwahati: With eight more Rohingya Muslims from Myanmar getting arrested in Assam, 22 Myanmarese, including women and children, have been detained in the last three days for illegally entering into India, officials said on Saturday.

An Assam Police official said that acting on a secret tip-off, eight Rohingyas, suspected to be refugees fleeing from their camps in southeast Bangladesh, were held on Friday from Mazarpar village in Hailakandi district in southern Assam.

GUWAHATI: A complaint lodged by a train passenger with a toll-free number led railway officials to 14 suspected Rohingya refugees.

The persons, arrested from a train at New Jalpaiguri station of the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR), had apparently fled a refugee camp in Bangladesh. They had boarded the train in Assam’s Badarpur.

— Nine people subject to a police probe over fundraising for the Arakan Army in Rakhine State were remanded in custody Friday, including several recently deported from Singapore.

Among the deportees is Ko Aung Myat Kyaw, who is believed to be the brother of Brigadier General Tun Myat Naing, the chief of the AA.

Police arrested three Rohingyas along with 3 kg gold and Tk 300,000 from Balukhali Rohingya camp in Ukhiya upazila on Tuesday night.

The arrestees are Aziz, 18, son of late Noor Ahmed of C-Block at Balukhali camp no. 9, Nurul Hashem, 28, son of Ilias of C-13 Block and Abul Kashem, 22, of C-7 Block.

Two Rohingya women were detained while attempting to board a UAE-bound flight from Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka early today.

The duo -- Jobeda Khatun, 63, and Jamila begum, 58 -- were apprehended by Special Branch (SB) around 2:40am, Ismail Hossain, additional superintendent of police (immigration) told The Daily Star.

The Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has arrested 24 Rohingya women and children along with 56 Bangladeshi passports.

They were arrested from a house in the Khilkhet Madhyapara area of Dhaka on Friday.

Police also arrested Kajol, son of the owner of the house, and broker Ayub, on charges of providing shelter to Rohingyas.

Police today detained five women including four Rohingas who tried to obtain Bangladeshi passport from Regional Passport Office (RPO) in Kurigram.

The Rohingya women are: Fatema, 26, daughter of Ashraf Ali; Mim, 25, daughter of Abdul Awal; Aleya Khatun, 26, daughter of Joynal Abedin; and Nuruka Akhtar, 25, daughter of Box Mia from Kutupalong Rohingya Camp in Cox’s Bazar where they have been living after fleeing persecution in Myanmar.

Four Rohingyas have been held by Airport Armed Police at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka.

The incident occurred around 11am on Sunday, said Md Alamgir Hossain, additional superintendent (operations and media) of Airport Armed Police.
