Investigate, Prevent Anti-Rohingya Violence in Aceh

(Jakarta) – Indonesian authorities should immediately stop all pushbacks of boats carrying ethnic Rohingya refugees, and investigate and end all assaults on refugees, Human Rights Watch said today. The authorities should allow them to disembark in the nearest safe port, provide protection and humanitarian assistance, and investigate online incitement of violence against them.

The United Nations World Food Program (WFP) is gearing up to restore its critical food assistance for the entire Rohingya population in Cox’s Bazar.

Starting on Monday, WFP will increase the food ration from $8 to $10 per person per month, and gradually add locally fortified rice to its food assistance package.

Rohingya among 2 held with 7,830 Yaba pills

Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) arrested two people, including a Rohingya man, along with 7,830 Yaba pills from Goalanda upazila in Rajbari district early Saturday.

Rohingya man Abul Kalam, 37, and Rafiqul Islam, 20, were nabbed from Daulatdia bus stand area at around 2:00 am while intending to supply those Yaba pills in different areas of the country, said Lt commander KM Shaikh Akhtar, company captain of RAB-10 in Faridpur.

The embattled Myanmar military, grappling with significant losses in its conflict against the Arakan Army, carried out a severe assault on Zedi Taung village - a Rohingya settlement in Buthidaung Township, Rakhine State - on December 28.

A family of six, including three children, perished in the assault on the fateful night. Only one survivor managed to escape but sustained severe injuries as their home succumbed to flames, consuming the lifeless bodies.

A navy vessel in Aceh drove away a boat carrying Rohingya from Myanmar, a military spokesperson said, as growing numbers of would-be refugees from the strife-torn country face hostility from locals.

The wooden boat was encountered in waters near Weh Island, off Sumatra, military spokesperson Nugraha Gumilar said.

Recently, the Rohingya issue in Indonesia resurfaced following their arrival on the coast of Aceh, such as Sabang, Pidie, and Bireuen, in mid-November 2023. The continuous influx of refugees has not been balanced with local resources in Aceh, particularly concerning the overcrowded conditions in the shelters, leading to widespread rejection in the region.
