20 children missing after fire at Rohingya refugee camp

Thousands have been rendered homeless and about 20 children have gone missing after a fire broke out on March 5 at a refugee camp on the Bangladesh-Myanmar border.

The fire started on the afternoon of March 5 in Ward 11 of the Balukhali refugee camp, located in Ukhiya Upazila, Cox’s Bazar District, Bangladesh. It lasted for two hours and resulted in injuries to 50 residents of the camp, according to local sources.

The Balukhali refugee camp was originally made up of around 8,000 shelters housing refugees from northern Rakhine State.

POLICE are searching for a Rohingya man who reportedly escaped from a quarantine centre at the Health Ministry’s Malaysia’s Training Institute in Tanjung Rambutan yesterday. Ipoh district police chief A. Asmadi Abdul Aziz said Rohim Mohd Zokoria, 27, was found missing when a ministry staffer was monitoring those quarantined at block E-2-83 of the facility at about 11am

The rescue teams rescued 70 people. The fishing vessel the were onboard traveled with a boat of which there are no traces. The victims were fleeing the overcrowded camps of Cox’s Bazar. Border guard commander: "The Rohingya lured by traffickers". Since last year, authorities have stopped the departure of over 500 refugees. 

Cox’s Bazar (AsiaNews / Agencies) - At least 14 people drowned this morning and more than 40 are missing following the sinking of a boat carrying Rohingya refugees off the southern coast of Bangladesh. About 130 people were massed on the fishing boat, which tried to cross the Gulf of Bengal to Malaysia. This was reported by the spokesman for the Bangladeshi coast guard, Hamidul Islam. So far, rescue teams have pulled 70 people to safety.

Rohingya man found dead in Cox’s Bazar

Police recovered the body of a young man of Rohingya community from a septic tank at Kutupalong refugee camp in Ukhia upazila in Cox's Bazar on Saturday, reports UNB.

The deceased was Shafiqul Islam, 26, son of Lokman Hakim of block-1 of the refugee camp.

Nurul Islam Mazumdar, officer-in-charge (investigation) of Ukhia police station, said Shafiqul was missing since Thursday. His elder brother filed an abduction case with the police station.
