Monsoon rain destroys 273 Rohingya shelters

At least 11 Rohingyas were injured and 273 shelters were destroyed during three days of continuous rain in Cox’s Bazar settlements, according to UN Refugee Agency.
More than 900,000 Rohingya refugees, who escaped persecution in Myanmar’s Rakhine state since August 2017, are living in the settlements.
An estimated 350mm of rain fell in 72 hours from Monday and more downpours are expected throughout the next week, with four months of the monsoon to go.
According to preliminary reports, there have been 26 landslides, UNHCR said.

Refugees worry about shelters with onset of monsoon

Thousands of refugees in Rakhine State are worried that their temporary shelters in temporary camps are not strong enough to withstand the onset of the monsoon season.
Some shelters in refugee camps in Kyauktaw and Ponnagyun townships were damaged by the heavy rain and strong wind that pummelled the area for two hours on Saturday.

Bangladesh is facing a dilemma over the planned transfer of thousands of Muslims from northern Rakhine State crowded into makeshift camps along the country’s border with Myanmar to an uninhabited island in the Bay of Bengal.
To ease social, economic, environmental and internal security hazards, the government plans to relocate nearly 100,000 refugees from the camps in Cox’s Bazar to Bhasan Char, which is about an hour by motor boat from the nearest shore.
