UN Calls for Investigation After Dozens Massacred in Myanmar

TRT World
27 Dec 2021

The United Nations is calling for a thorough and transparent investigation into the massacre of at least 35 people, including women and children, in Myanmar's eastern Kayah state. The incident, that's reported to have taken place on December 24, came to the world's attention after photos taken by the Karen Human Rights Group showed bodies on the backs of trucks, burnt beyond recognition. While Myanmar's military stands accused of another mass killing, the country's state media is reporting that the army had shot and killed terrorists. International condemnations are in order, but are these enough to change the reality on the ground?

Rohingya: “We would rather die now than be kept here forever"

TRT WORLD

CJ Werleman
2020-08-26

The Rohingya are as far from home today as they were three years ago today when they were violently expelled from their homeland.

Exactly three years ago today, Myanmar soldiers, accompanied by local Buddhist militias, launched a wave of attacks on Rohingya villages in the northwest corner of the southeast Asian country. More than a million Rohingya genocide survivors, most fled in the 2017 violence, find themselves dislocated in what has become a never-ending road to justice for the world’s most persecuted religious minority.

The Rohingya could be facing another catastrophe

TRT WORLD
CJ Werleman
2020.04.29

Rohingya Muslims have been discarded by the international community and are at high risk for contracting Covid-19 in crowded living spaces.

The fate of more than one million Rohingya genocide survivors has never looked so grim in the three years since they fled their villages for the safety of the Bangladeshi border.

When summarising the plight of the Rohingya, "survivor" becomes the operative word, given their ongoing physical and psychological injuries, with most having witnessed their homes destroyed, mass killings, and their wives, mothers, and daughters raped, many whom were later burnt alive or hacked to death.

Myanmar on Trial: Will the Government enforce the ICJ's Ruling?

TRT WORLD
Jan 24, 2020

The International Court of Justice (ICJ) ruled that Myanmar’s government must protect the Rohingya Muslim minority from acts of genocide. That was despite a robust defence from de facto leader Aung San Suu Kyi. Once a human rights champion, the Nobel Peace Prize winner has seen her international reputation crumble, after she defended the very military that had locked her away for 15 years. Suu Kyi and her government reject the ruling, and condemn human rights groups for painting a distorted picture.

Aung San Suu Kyi and Viktor Orban discuss ‘Muslim population challenge’

TRT WORLD
06-06-2019

The Burmese politician and Nobel Peace Prize winner has been slammed for her silence amid Myanmar’s genocide of Rohingya Muslims, while Orban is a fierce critic of Islam and Muslim migration to Europe.

Nobel Peace Prize winner Aung San Suu Kyi has become a pariah in recent years over her lack of action and silence over Myanmar’s persecution of its mainly Muslim Rohingya minority.

Did International Pressure Force Myanmar to Release Two Reuters Journalists?

Wa Lone and Kyaw Soe Oo walked free after more than 500 days behind bars. The two Reuters journalists were investigating the killing of 10 Rohingya Muslims during an army crackdown in Rakhine State. They were then arrested and sentenced to seven years in jail for violating the country’s Official Secrets Act. Their incarceration led to an international outcry. Did that pressure lead to their release?

Why is Saudi Arabia deporting Rohingya refugees?

Saudi Arabia has long projected an image of itself as a defender of Muslims, that claim is increasingly being challenged as it now sends Rohingya refugees back to Bangladesh – a country they had fled.
