A Thai man accused of leading a human trafficking gang has been arrested along with two accomplices in connection with the smuggling of 26 Rohingya migrants, three of whom died of suffocation in an overcrowded truck, police said on Saturday.

“I left Myanmar because I felt unsafe.”

brahim*, a Rohingya man in his twenties, said armed conflicts and intentional burnings of his village had “forced everyone to flee.”

He’s not the only one. New research from the UN Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) found that tens of thousands of people from Myanmar, other parts of Southeast Asia, and from outside the region are smuggled to, through and from Indonesia, Malaysia and Thailand every year.

MEULABOH: Four Indonesians have been arrested in connection with the smuggling of dozens of Rohingya refugees whose boat capsized in waters off the archipelago’s westernmost coast last month, police said Tuesday.

Immigration busts Rohingya smuggling ring

PUTRAJAYA: The Immigration Department busted a Rohingya migrant smuggling syndicate in a special operation around Kota Baru, Kelantan.

Immigration director-general Datuk Ruslin Jusoh said the operation on Sunday led to the arrest of 10 people, including Ali, a Rohingya man suspected to be the syndicate’s mastermind, as well as two alleged “tekong darat” (ground coordinators).
