The Supreme Court of the Union tomorrow is going to make a decision if it accepts the appeal submitted by Dr Aye Maung and author Wai Hun Aung who have been sentenced to 20-years imprisonment, said a lawyer.

The duo had their appeal rejected in the High Court of Arakan State, so they submitted an appeal to the Supreme Court of the Union in Nay Pyi Taw on 29 May.

Myanmar court jails Rakhine leader for 20 years for treason

A Myanmar court on Tuesday sentenced a prominent ethnic Rakhine leader to 20 years in jail for treason, a verdict likely to intensify anger amid fighting between the ethnic group and the army.

Security forces tried to calm hundreds of supporters outside the court in Rakhine state capital Sittwe as Aye Maung was escorted to a waiting police van following the verdict.

Ethnic political parties on Tuesday said they are disappointed by a Rakhine State court’s decision to sentence politician U Aye Maung and author U Wai Hin Aung to a combined 22 years in prison for treason and sedition.

The Sittwe Township Court sentenced U Aye Maung, the founder of the Arakan National Party, to 20 years in prison for treason and U Wai Hin Aung to two years for sedition.
