A United Nations fact-finding mission called on Monday for an embargo on arms sales to Myanmar and for targeted sanctions on businesses with connections to the military after finding they are funding human rights abuses.

UN investigators detailed how businesses run by Myanmar’s army, also known as the Tatmadaw, are engaged in such violations and provide financial support for military operations such as efforts to force Muslim Rohingya out of Rakhine state in what has been branded a “genocide”.

The turmoil following the military coup in Myanmar, coupled with the impact of COVID-19 could result in up to 25 million people – nearly half of the country’s population, living in poverty by early next year, a United Nations report said on Friday.

That level of impoverishment has not been seen in the country since 2005, and the economy is facing significant risks of a collapse, the UN Development Programme (UNDP) said in its report, COVID-19, Coup d’état and Poverty: Compounding Negative Shocks and their Impact on Human Development in Myanmar.

 The United Nations recently accepted a 36-page report that examined the body’s systemic failures in the country.


The United Nations recently accepted a 36-page report that examined the body’s involvement in Myanmar from 2010 to 2018.

The report, by former Guatemalan foreign minister and UN executive Gert Rosenthal, acknowledges that there were “systemic failures” in how the UN responded to the crisis in Myanmar.

There was a "systemic failure" of the United Nations in dealing with the situation in Burma ahead of a deadly 2017 military crackdown because it did not have a unified strategy and lacked Security Council support, according to an internal report.

United Nations secretary general Antonio Guterres ordered an investigation into the UN's failure in the Rohingya crisis. Rohingya is the Muslim community in Myanmar being persecuted at the hands of Buddhists and Rohingya Muslims fled to other countries as refugees. UN took notice but failed to handle the situation or end it. 
 The United Nations experienced “systemic failures” in its handling of the situation in Myanmar leading up to the 2017 mass exodus of Rohingya, a UN report said on Monday.
