Layers of hatred and distrust in Myanmar need to be picked apart with care - and gradually

 
Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak broke with the spirit of Asean camaraderie by joining a recent march protesting against Myanmar's treatment of its beleaguered Rohingya, a Muslim minority group within the predominantly Buddhist country. "We want to tell Aung San Suu Kyi enough is enough!" he told the leader of the fellow Asean member, in reference to alleged atrocities some have condemned as "genocide".

 
In contrast, former United Nations secretary-general Kofi Annan, tasked by Ms Suu Kyi with heading an advisory commission on the situation in Rakhine state where the Rohingya live, urged caution in using the word "genocide". Visiting Indonesian Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi, meanwhile, offered humanitarian assistance without a public rebuke.

UNICEF boss urges Myanmar to enact Kofi Annan’s recommendations on Rohingya crisis

YANGON (Reuters) - The head of the U.N. children’s fund urged Myanmar on Monday to implement the recommendations of a panel on the Rohingya crisis led by former U.N. head Kofi Annan, saying it had yet to create conditions right for the return of refugees from Bangladesh.

 Speaking at a forum in the capital, Naypyitaw, UNICEF executive director Henrietta Fore said children from the Rohingya Muslim minority, a persecuted and mostly stateless community from Buddhist-majority Myanmar, were living “a precarious and an almost hopeless existence” in camps in neighbouring Bangladesh.

Clarifying on its nomenclature, the Annan Commission Report on the Rakhine (Arakan) State (pdf), notes that "In line with the request of the State Counsellor [Aung San Suu Kyi], the Commission uses neither the term 'Bengali' nor 'Rohingya', who are referred to as 'Muslims' or 'the Muslim community in Rakhine'".

This left the Commission with the only option of referring to the crisis in Rakhine from the vantage point of universal human rights, rather than the question of historical antecedents. Yet the request from Suu Kyi and the Commission's compliance to not mention the terms "Bengali" or "Rohingya" will stand against future measures to implement the Commission's recommendations for restoring citizenship to the Rohingyas.

Recently Myanmar army has reportedly carried out a planned ethnic cleansing in its Arakan province against the ethnic minority, Rohingyas following a riot. The media reported that 160 people were killed and 16 thousand Rohingyas were displaced and many are stranded in Bangladesh-Myanmar border. The Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) intercepted the fleeing Rohingyas and stopped them from crossing into our border. Many Rohingyas were pushed back to Myanmar.

In an move that is cautiously welcomed by Burma human rights organizations, Aung San Suu Kyi announced the creation of an Advisory Commission to find “lasting solutions” to the manifold issues affecting Rakhine State–the most serious being the genocide of the Rohingya Muslims.
