‘Death sentence awaits us’: Coup-hit Myanmar officers in India

Mizoram, India – Weeks after the February 1 military coup in Myanmar, Kunga, a 24-year-old low-ranking member of the Myanmar army, was ordered a new set of duties: to spy on the civil disobedience movement (CDM) protesters in Tonzang town of Chin state.

Soon after, he deserted the military, joined the CDM and escaped to neighbouring India.

Kunga is among dozens of Myanmar security officials and citizens who have escaped to the northeastern parts of India amid a military crackdown on anti-coup protesters. Reports say at least 180 people have died in the violence in Myanmar.

Mizoram: 23 Nepali girls rescued, 8 Rohingya women still detained

The girls in their teens were allegedly trafficked from Nepal and were suspected to be sent to Southeast Asian countries via Mizoram for forced prostitution, say police


Aizawl: At least 23 girls from Nepal allegedly trafficked for flesh trade were rescued by Mizoram police, a senior police officer said on Tuesday.

Mizoram Inspector General of Police (intelligence and law and order) LH Shanliana told EastMojo that the Nepali girls, believed to be victims of human trafficking, were rescued from Aizawl and Champhai near Myanmar border last week.

The Mizoram Police have rescued 31 teenage Nepali and Rohingya Muslim girls, suspected to be victims of human trafficking, an official said on Wednesday.

"Police last week rescued 23 Nepali and eight Rohingya Muslim girls. We suspect these girls, aged between 15 to 22 years, are victims of human trafficking," Inspector General of Mizoram Police (Law and Order), L.H. Shanliana, told IANS.
