Attacks on Rohingyas raise fear of fresh influx

A Bangkok-based rights group said on Tuesday that it had documented indiscriminate attacks on civilians, killings, destruction of civilian homes, and forced displacement during a four-day-long attack by the Myanmar junta beginning January 25 in a predominantly Rohingya-Muslim village in northern Rakhine State along the Bangladesh border.

Clashes have broken out between the Arakan Army (AA) and Myanmar’s junta in Rathedaung, Kyauktaw, Minbya and Mrauk U townships on Monday, with at least three junta positions falling across Rakhine State, according to the armed group.

The AA attacked junta Border Guard Police outposts in Done Pike and Chein Khar Li villages, Rathedaung Township, in northern Rakhine State, before dawn.

NAYPYITAW—The director general of Myanmar’s President’s Office U Zaw Htay has said that Myanmar has been a target of the Islamist militant group ISIS since 2012 when the group shifted its focus to northern Rakhine State after losing its footholds in Syria and Iraq.

“ISIS mainly nurtured home-grown cells. The terrorists who entered from outside linked and worked with radical elements inside the country, as in the case of Sri Lanka,” U Zaw Htay told reporters.

Myanmar, Bangladesh to discuss repatriation May 3.

Myanmar and Bangladesh officials will meet on May 3 in Nay Pyi Taw to discuss the much delayed repatriation of the more than 700,000 northern Rakhine State refugees living in cramped camps in Bangladesh. 


The fourth joint working group meeting of the countries will be the first between the two sides since the failed attempt to repatriate the first batch of refugees last December.

YANGON — Two civilians in northern Rakhine State’s Mrauk-U Township were wounded by shrapnel from artillery fire after the Myanmar Army began shooting and shelling in the area on Wednesday night and into Thursday, according to locals.

Mrauk-U resident Ko Than Tun said about 460 people fled Baungdwat Village, about 3 km south of the township’s urban center, on Thursday and have taken shelter at the Myothit monastery in central Mrauk-U.

When Faizul* fled the smouldering remains of his village in Myanmar's Northern Rakhine state, he barely noticed the shards of wood that punctured every extremity of his body. He just wanted to escape the bullets raining down from a helicopter above. But by the time he reached Bangladesh, a shrapnel wound on his right leg had grown to the size of a golf ball, and its yellow flesh was festering with signs of an infection.

Up to 30,000 people have been displaced by renewed violence in northern Rakhine State, the UN said on November 18. Half of the displacement occurred over the course of the previous week, when dozens of people died in clashes with the military.
