Entire Myanmar army battalion surrenders to MNDAA in Shan State

The spokesperson for the Myanmar National Democratic Alliance Army (MNDAA) confirmed that the complete Light Infantry Battalion No. (125), stationed in the Kokang Self-Administered Zone in Northern Shan State, surrendered on 28 November.

Armed forces arrested many civilians in Shan State as part of the military regime’s campaign against the southeastern nation’s protest movement that has resisted its authority after the Army overthrew the democratically elected government before it could be sworn into power during a bloodless coup about four months ago.

Armed forces, which included soldiers, police and members of a People’s Militia Force, arrested five youths collecting donations for displaced civilians in a market in the border town of Muse on Wednesday morning, May 26.

Ma Pyae Pyae, 32; Ma Nyein Thida, 28; Ma Soe Su Hlaing, 24; Ma Htet Yamin Nwe, 20 and Maung Swam Win, 17, were detained at about 10am, according to a woman.

Mobs of stick-wielding church-goers in Myanmar's northeast used to descend on dealers and addicts in a desperate effort to save their communities from a meth-induced health crisis sweeping the country.

But anonymous death threats brought the vigilante operations to a halt.

"It simply became too dangerous for us," says Zau Man, leader of the local Baptist church in Kutkai, a town in Shan State scarred by addiction.

The government is implementing step by step the pledges that the National League for Democracy made in the 2015 general election, said State Counsellor Daw Aung San Suu Kyi.

Speaking at the 72nd Shan State Day ceremony at the Awayyar fire balloon field in Taunggyi, Shan State, on Thursday, Daw Aung San Suu Kyi said, “There must be development and peace first. Then it is very important to draft a constitution that is accepted by all and is supportive of the federal union. We are trying to implement the promises to the people step-by-step,” she said.
