With the election approaching, Dhaka is busy greeting foreign delegates and observers. The foreign observers are all invariably pressing for a free and fair election. It appears a balanced goal of the Westerners holding to their deep convictions of democracy and freedom. However, the policy is riddled with inconsistency and only appears subordinate to the geostrategic goals. The esteemed values of democracy and freedom are not sacrosanct per se — rather only viewed from a narrow geostrategic prism.

Myanmar coup caught everyone by surprise, says the Chinese envoy in Dhaka

Chinese Ambassador to Bangladesh Li Jiming has said China will continue to serve as a “bridge of communication” and try its best to facilitate early results as Bangladesh seeks swift repatriation of Rohingyas to Myanmar.

“We fully understand the keenness of Bangladesh to start repatriation, and our determination to help the two friendly neighbours resolve this long-standing issue will never change,” he said while speaking at an online symposium hosted by the Cosmos Foundation.

Dhaka urges Canada to send 2m vaccines

Foreign minister also separately proposed that Canada help vaccinating forcibly displaced Rohingyas in Bangladesh.

Bangladesh on Tuesday urged Canada to send at least two million doses of AstraZeneca Covid-19 vaccine to Bangladesh to meet immediate second dose vaccine requirements in the country.

The request was made when Canadian High Commissioner to Bangladesh Benoit Préfontaine called on Foreign Minister Dr AK Abdul Momen at the Foreign Ministry in Dhaka, a foreign ministry press release said.

The crisis might turn into a broader regional and global security issue, speakers said during the webinar

Foreign Minister Dr AK Abdul Momen has said they should now seriously consider regional or multilateral initiatives for the repatriation of Rohingyas to Myanmar as it remains a compelling priority for Bangladesh.

"Canada, with its global stature and standing on human rights issues, may consider taking a lead in such initiatives. Bangladesh always stands ready to work with Canada and other partners in this direction," he said.

Dhaka has urged the United Nations to play a more proactive role to find an acceptable solution at the earliest to the protracted Rohingya crisis that has been affecting Bangladesh in a bad manner for a long time.

Bangladesh’s newly-appointed Permanent Representative to the UN in Geneva Mustafizur Rahman made the call while presenting his letter of credentials to Tatiana Valovaya, director-general of the UN, Geneva, on Monday.

Washington assures Dhaka of continuing support to solve Rohingya crisis

US Defence Secretary Dr. Mark T Esper called Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina over phone today and assured her of continuing his country’s support in bringing a peaceful solution to the protracted Rohingya crisis.



“The US defence secretary phoned Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina this evening and assured her of continuing US support in bringing a peaceful solution to the Rohingya problem,” PM’s Press Secretary Ihsanul Karim told BSS.

The press secretary said the US defence secretary expressed his appreciation for the generosity shown by Bangladesh on the Rohingya issue and thanked Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in this regard.

Bangladesh foreign minister is seeking support from ARF partners

Dhaka on Saturday suggested Myanmar to engage non-military civilian observers from its friendly countries in Rohingya repatriation process to reduce trust deficit among the forcibly displaced people for returning to their land of origin in Rakhine with safety and security.

“In order to decline trust deficit and build confidence, we suggested Myanmar to engage non-military civilian observers from their friendly country like ASEAN, China, Russia, India or other friends of their choice,” said Foreign Minister AK Abdul Momen.

Speakers at a programme here on Thursday urged the global community to play a stronger role for the sustainable repatriation of Rohingyas to their place of origin in Rakhine state of Myanmar.

While addressing the panel discussion titled ‘Rohingya: The Need for Justice and Rights in Rakhine 2020’ at the Brac Centre Inn, they also called for imposing strict economic sanctions on Myanmar and putting pressure on its military to resolve the Rohingya crisis.

The International Criminal Court (ICC) has officially lanunched an investigation into atrocities committed against the Rohingya in the Rakhine state of Myanmar.

Phakiso Mochochoko, director of the Department of Jurisdiction, Complementarity and Cooperation Division of the ICC prosecutor's office, on Monday told newsmen that the justice would be delivered for Rohingya victims though the Hague-based court process would take years to conclude their investigation.

We welcome you to today’s press conference and thank you for your interest in the activities of the International Criminal Court (the “ICC” or the “Court”).

My name is Phakiso Mochochoko, and I am the Director of Jurisdiction, Complementary and Cooperation Division of the ICC Office of the Prosecutor. This is not the first delegation that ICC Prosecutor, Mrs Fatou Bensouda, has sent to Bangladesh to explain the Court’s judicial process to the wider public. You will recall that my colleague, Deputy Prosecutor, Mr James Stewart, was here in July last year, but this is the first such visit by her Office since the opening of a formal investigation.

A delegation of the International Criminal Court is due in Dhaka this week to open talks with Bangladesh on signing an agreement as a prerequisite to open a full investigation into alleged crimes against the Rohingyas who were driven from Myanmar to Bangladesh.

The ICC team led by one of its deputy prosecutors is expected to arrive in Dhaka on Tuesday (Jul 16), an official told Bangla Tribune.

The Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has arrested 24 Rohingya women and children along with 56 Bangladeshi passports.

They were arrested from a house in the Khilkhet Madhyapara area of Dhaka on Friday.

Police also arrested Kajol, son of the owner of the house, and broker Ayub, on charges of providing shelter to Rohingyas.

4 Rohingyas detained at Dhaka airport

Four Rohingya people including three women were detained at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport, Dhaka today while attempting to fly to Indonesia.

Tipped off, a team of Airport Police detained the four from the outdoor around 11:00am, Airport Police’s Additional Superintendent Alamgir Hossian told The Daily Star.

Detainees Anwar, 30, Rokeya, 19, Marijan, 23, and Amena Begum, 26, were attempting to fly to Indonesia via Malaysia by a flight of a Malaysian Airlines at noon.

They are the residents of Maungdaw in Rakhine State of Myanmar but they were bearing Bangladeshi passports, the police official said.

Legal actions will be taken against them, he added.

Four Rohingyas have been held by Airport Armed Police at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka.

The incident occurred around 11am on Sunday, said Md Alamgir Hossain, additional superintendent (operations and media) of Airport Armed Police.
