This petition is given under the General Assembly Resolution 53/144 of 8 March 1999, "Declaration on the Right and Responsibility of Individuals, Groups and Organs of Society to Promote and Protect Universally Recognized Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms" and Human Rights Council Resolution 5/1 of 18 June 2007, “Institution-building of the United Nations Human Rights Council” on the “de facto” statelessness situation of the Myanmar minorities and in order to guarantee their erga omnes right to return back to Myanmar.

UN Special Rapporteur expresses alarm at escalating conflict in Myanmar.

The UN’s human rights expert on Myanmar has expressed alarm at the escalating violence in northern and central Rakhine State and Chin State, and called on all sides to exercise restraints in use of force and to ensure the protection of civilians.

Since November 2018 the Myanmar military, known as the Tatmadaw, and Arakan Army (AA), an ethnic armed organisation, have been engaged in heavy fighting, resulting in deaths and injuries to civilians. At least 5,000 people have been displaced from their homes.

YANGON, Myanmar — A court in Myanmar is set to rule Friday in the appeal of two Reuters journalists jailed last year for violating the country’s colonial-era secrets law in a case that drew widespread condemnation from rights groups, foreign governments and media watchdogs as an attack on the free press.

NLD needs to seize the moment, analysts say.
