LONDON: Saudi Arabia’s permanent representative to the UN, Abdallah Al-Mouallimi, on Tuesday chaired a virtual meeting of the informal working group on Myanmar.

The participants, including UN Special Rapporteur on the Situation of Human Rights in Myanmar Thomas Andrews, discussed the current situation in Myanmar and the response of the international community, and ways to find solutions to the humanitarian challenges in the country arising from the pandemic. Other topics included the latest political developments and the humanitarian situation of the Rohingya Muslim minority.

The United States accused China on Friday of committing genocide and crimes against humanity against Uighur Muslims and other minorities, and China accused the US of discrimination, hatred and even savage murder of people of African and Asian descent.

The clash came at the UN General Assembly's commemoration of the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination and was sparked by one line in the speech by US Ambassador Linda Thomas Greenfield, who talked about being a descendent of slaves, growing up in the segregated South, and surviving racism including being called an N-word.

UNITED NATIONS — This year's U.N. General Assembly meeting began with calls for multilateralism and cooperation — a declaration that the urgency for countries to unite "has rarely been greater." It concluded with a parade of divisive grievances that echoed when the final gavel fell.

Leader after leader in days of speeches delivered virtually stressed the importance of working together to navigate the coronavirus outbreak and the challenges that lie beyond it. As Germany's foreign minister put it, COVID-19 "shows that international cooperation is neither an ideology nor an end in itself. On the contrary, it delivers results, far beyond the actual pandemic."
