A police officer killed in Mrauk-U

A police officer was shot dead by two unknown assailants while he was having dinner at a restaurant near a police station in Mrauk-U, Rakhine State, on Saturday night, police said.

Police Inspector Kyaw Kyaw Hla of Tain Nyo police station in Mrauk-U died of gunshot wounds to the head and chest while he was being operated on at hospital, the official said.

Ethnic political parties on Tuesday said they are disappointed by a Rakhine State court’s decision to sentence politician U Aye Maung and author U Wai Hin Aung to a combined 22 years in prison for treason and sedition.

The Sittwe Township Court sentenced U Aye Maung, the founder of the Arakan National Party, to 20 years in prison for treason and U Wai Hin Aung to two years for sedition. 

NLD needs to seize the moment, analysts say.

A Rakhine political party said Wednesday that it will hold a meeting in Rakhine state’s capital Sittwe to discuss a warning by a central government spokesman this week against support for the region’s ethnic military force following a deadly attack it conducted on police outposts.
