Burma Army Pays Compensation To Family Of Murder Victim in Kachin State

The military promised to launch a investigate into three soldiers who allegedly raped and murdered a 51-year-old woman in Momauk Township last week.

On Monday, military officials from LIB-616 and LID-88 met with the victim's family in Nuam Lang village to apologize and give them 2.1M kyat ($1,276) in compensation.

“They said action would be taken against the three soldiers according to the law. They didn't call it a rape case, they said it's a murder case,” a local man close to the victim's family told KNG.

The Kachin Independence Organization/Army (KIA) destroyed a Tatmadaw camp on Thursday, March 11, after the military regime shot and killed peaceful protesters in Kachin State’s capital city, Myitkyina.

“We heard gunfire at 3 am. The next morning, when we went to look at the military camp there was nothing was left. It was burned to the ground,” said a local who requested for his name not used.

The Arakan Army, which is battling the Myanmar military for autonomy in turbulent Rakhine state, has grown in both force strength and firepower since its formation in 2009 to the level that the rebel group can now launch successful offensives on police or military outposts. And its message is drawing as many young female recruits as men.

THE SECURITY situation in Rakhine State continues to worsen as fighting between a defiant Arakan Army and the Tatmadaw spreads to more townships, claiming more lives on both sides and displacing thousands of frightened and anxious villagers.

Shortly before the latest flare-up in fighting, Frontier interviewed the Arakan Army’s deputy chief, Brigadier-General Nyo Tun Aung, near Laiza, the town on the Chinese border where the Kachin Independence Organisation has its headquarters.
