Meta’s new content policies risk fueling more mass violence and genocide

Recent content policy announcements by Meta pose a grave threat to vulnerable communities globally and drastically increase the risk that the company will yet again contribute to mass violence and gross human rights abuses – just like it did in Myanmar in 2017. The company’s significant contribution to the atrocities suffered by the Rohingya people is the subject of a new whistleblower complaint that has just been filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). 

Rohingya refugees file legal petition against Meta, alleging inaction on hateful content

The petition seeks the suspension of hate-spreading accounts and transparency in content moderation, with the case scheduled for later this month. 

Two Rohingya refugees, Mohammad Hamim and Kawsar Mohammed, have approached the Delhi High Court, seeking legal action against social media giant Meta. The petitioners, who fled persecution in Myanmar and arrived in India in 2018 and 2022, allege that Meta’s algorithms promote hate speech and violence against the Rohingya community, posing a threat to their lives.

Meta should immediately pay reparations to the Rohingya for the role that Facebook played in the ethnic cleansing of the persecuted minority group, Amnesty International said today.

Facebook’s algorithms and Meta’s ruthless pursuit of profit created an echo chamber that helped foment hatred of the Rohingya people and contributed to the conditions which forced the ethnic group to flee Myanmar en masse.

Amnesty International claims that Facebook was aware that its algorithms were amplifying harmful anti-Rohingya hate speech in Myanmar, but still did nothing to stop it.

Facebook’s parent company Meta should pay reparations to Rohingya communities who were driven out of western Myanmar in 2017, given the role that it played in enabling the campaign of ethnic cleansing, the human rights group Amnesty International said in a report published yesterday.

In a new report published yesterday, Amnesty claims that Facebook’s “dangerous algorithms and reckless pursuit of profit… substantially contributed to the atrocities perpetrated by the Myanmar military against the Rohingya people in 2017.”
