UK stands by Bangladesh on Rohingya issue: envoy

IUB holds daylong event

A daylong event titled "Rohingya: City on the Hill" was held at the Independent University, Bangladesh (IUB) on its Bashundhara campus in Dhaka on Wednesday.

Global Studies and Governance Program of the School of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences at IUB organised the programme that highlighted humanitarian and repatriation challenges in Bangladesh since Rohingyas influx, said a press release.

British High Commissioner to Bangladesh Robert Chatterton Dickson was the chief guest at the inaugural session. He said the UK remains beside Bangladesh in addressing Rohingya-related challenges.

Giorgi Gigauri, chief of mission, IOM Bangladesh; and Fumiko Kashiwa, assistant representative, UNHCR, were special guests. A Matin Chowdhury, chairman of IUB; and Nilufer Zafarullah, chairman, Education, Science, Technology and Cultural Development Trust, founding trust of IUB, took part in the programme. IUB Vice Chancellor (Acting) Prof Milan Pagon spoke.

At the closing session, Senior Foreign Secretary Masud Bin Momen was the chief guest. Dr Mercy Tembon, country director for Bangladesh and Bhutan, World Bank; and Mia Seppo, UN resident coordinator, were special guests.
