The UK Minister for the Indo-Pacific, Anne-Marie Trevelyan, on Tuesday announced further UK funding of £4.5 million to provide vital humanitarian services to Rohingya refugees and host communities in Bangladesh.

She made the announcement at a UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) regional conference in Bangkok on the Rohingya crisis.

An appeal for nearly $1 billion to help Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh is more than a third funded, the head of the United Nations refugee agency said on Tuesday, as officials and refugees called on donors not to forget the crisis.

Donors aim to meet $1b target in funding for the refugees in 2020, urge Myanmar to create conditions for their return

The international community yesterday pledged $597 million in humanitarian assistance for Rohingyas in the region and urged Myanmar to create conditions for their repatriation.

The US, EU, and UK, announced $200 million, €96 million and £37 million.

The announcement came at a donors' conference for the Rohingyas co-hosted by the US, UK, EU and UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR).

This year, Bangladesh received less than 50 percent of the $1 billion required for the Rohingya refugees.

A joint UN-hosted donor conference to rally international support behind Myanmar’s displaced Rohingya minority, ended on Thursday with a promise to continue engaging with concerned countries towards finding a long-term solution to their plight.

“We will continue to work together to maintain international attention on the Rohingya crisis and to shift from short-term critical interventions, to a more sustained and stable support”, said the closing statement from co-hosts the UN refugee agency (UNHCR), the European Union (EU), United Kingdom and United States.

The UK is co-hosting a donor conference today for the Rohingya refugee response, alongside the United States, European Union and UN refugee agency (UNHCR).

Bringing together donor countries and partners from the region, this conference will rally international support for the Rohingya humanitarian response in Bangladesh, Myanmar and other countries hosting Rohingya refugees in the region. Our aim is to ensure sustained support for Rohingya refugees and displaced populations, while working towards long-term durable solutions.

Situation may worsen without more funding for Rohingyas, warns WFP

At a regular briefing in Geneva on Friday, WFP spokesperson Hervé Verhoosel explained that it costs the food-assistance branch of the global body $16 million every month to feed almost 900,000 Rohingyas in Cox’s Bazar

The World Food Programme (WFP), the food-assistance branch of the United Nations, has warned that the situation in regards to feeding hundreds of Rohingyas sheltered in Cox’s Bazar could deteriorate ‘rapidly’ if the adequate funding is not made available.

Two years after the latest influx of Rohingyas that began on August 25, 2017, due to an unprecedented brutal military crackdown by Myanmar, funding to look after the persecuted people sheltering in Cox’s Bazar, remains a great challenge.

Three quarters of the year has already elapsed with only 35% of the required $920 million having been made available.

The 2019 Joint Response Plan for the Rohingya refugee response is only 34 per cent funded, as of 31 July 2019, with USD 313 million received against the overall needs of USD 920 million. Currently the most well-funded Sectors are Education (35%), Food Security (33%) and WASH (31%) based on the respective appeals. Food Security Sector has received so far USD 84 million. In 2019, no funding was yet reported towards Emergency Telecommunications Sector, and Health Sector is only 13% funded.
