Turkish Ambassador to Bangladesh, Ramis Sen, has said that his country is standing alongside the oppressed Rohingya community and will continue to provide humanitarian aid for them as long as they are in Bangladesh.

According to a press release, Ambassador Sen expressed Turkey's commitment to enhancing the education, culture, mental development, and overall quality of life for the Rohingyas.

A Turkish charity on Monday distributed 15,000 food packets to Rohingya refugees and their hosts in Bangladesh for the Muslim holy month of Ramadan set to begin this week, said officials of the group, which is tied to Turkey’s Religious Affairs Directorate or Diyanet.

“For the 2021 Ramadan program we distributed 11,800 food packets for the Rohingya community. But we didn't forget the host community. We distributed 3,200 food packages for our Bangladeshi brothers and sisters,” Oguzhan Adsiz, the Bangladesh coordinator for Turkey’s Diyanet Foundation (TDF), told Anadolu Agency on Monday night.

Turkey's state-run aid agency will provide two meals a day to approximately 20,000 people who were left without shelter after a massive blaze swept through a Bangladeshi refugee camp holding almost a million Rohingya Muslims on Monday, leaving at least 15 people dead, over 500 injured and nearly 50,000 homeless.

The Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency (TIKA), which plans to reestablish a kitchen in the region in a short time, will provide two hot meals a day to nearly 20,000 refugees in cooperation with the World Food Program (WFP), in an effort to help Rohingyas in Cox's Bazar district through difficult times.

“The voices of our brothers and sisters will be better heard in the world,” Abdullah Eren, head of a Turkish state-run agency said. Eren’s Presidency of Turks Abroad and Related Communities (YTB) joined forces with Anadolu Agency (AA) to deliver journalism education to the Rohingya Muslims.

Members of the displaced community who fled persecution in Myanmar will have an opportunity to join the online Media Education Program starting on March 29.

Turkey said it had resumed diplomatic contacts with Egypt, a sign it’s making progress in rebooting relations with some Arab nations that for years have been strained over Islamist politics and regional conflicts.

The talks are at the “intelligence and foreign ministry levels,” Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said Friday, according to the state-run Anadolu Agency.

Mr. Cavusoglu said that while neither side had set preconditions, “it’s not that easy to move on as if nothing has happened after years of broken ties.” President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said shortly after that contacts could move to a higher level if they produced results.

The deep-rooted relations between Turkey and Bangladesh date back to the 13th century, as incumbent Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina pointed out in a speech during the inauguration of Bangladesh's new embassy complex in the Turkish capital Ankara.

Though the two modern nation-states established formal diplomatic relations in 1974, the extensive relations between Turkey and the people of Bengal have existed since the medieval era, through the latter's Sultanate, Mughal and British periods, to modern times.

Apart from the Mughal-Ottoman relations, Bengali Muslims supported Turkey in its War of Independence in the early 20th century. The interactions and cultural exchanges throughout history have resulted in substantial influence on different aspects of cooperation.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has urged Turkey to get involved in the process of repatriation of the Rohingya refugees to Myanmar to ensure return to their homeland.

She made the call when visiting Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu met her at the Ganabhaban on Wednesday, her Deputy Press Secretary Hasan Jahid Tusher said at a media briefing.

Bangladesh has long been calling on the international community to pile more pressure on Myanmar to take back their displaced Rohingya nationals in a safe, dignified and sustainable repatriation.

Ismail Gundogdu, Bangladesh coordinator for the Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency (TIKA), reported to Anadolu Agency, "As part of our winter gifts to the Rohingya Muslims we have completed distribution of blankets to 5,000 Rohingya families. We will continue our support to the persecuted refugees throughout the whole winter season, which will hit Bangladesh in full swing starting in mid-December."

Foreign Minister Dr AK Abdul Momen is scheduled to leave for Turkey today to attend the inauguration ceremony of the newly-constructed Bangladesh Chancery Complex, said a senior official of the ministry yesterday.

Dr Momen will join his Turkish counterpart Mevlut Cavusoglu at the ceremony, to be held in Ankara on September 14. He will also attend other bilateral engagements during his visit.

KUALA LUMPUR, July 27 — The Rohingyas should be treated as Myanmar nationals or be given a chance to form their own state, said Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad.
He said even though Malaysia generally does not wish to interfere with the internal affairs of other countries, it does so in this case due to the massacre or genocide that is happening in Myanmar.

Mevlut Cavusoglu reiterates Turkey's support for Rohingya Muslims

 

Turkey's foreign minister on Thursday shared Eid greetings with Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh over a video call.

Mevlut Cavusoglu spoke to refugees receiving treatment at the Turkish Sahara Hospital in Cox's Bazar region, according to a source who asked not to be named due to restriction on speaking to the media.
