DHAKA, Feb 27, 2025 (BSS) - Home Adviser Lt. Gen. Md. Jahangir Alam Chowdhury (Retd.) has called for international pressure on Myanmar for the repatriation of Rohingya refugees (forcibly displaced Myanmar citizens).

“Exert more international influence on Myanmar for repatriation of Rohingya refugees,” he requested the international community when a United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) led by Filippo Grandi paid a courtesy call on him at the ministry office at Bangladesh Secretariat here this afternoon.

The family of four refugees filled seven suitcases for their new life in America. They packed blankets, tin plates, one blade for clearing the land in their future home and one for chopping meat. They left behind what they were not supposed to bring: slingshots, fish paste, traditional medicines from their native Myanmar.

The United States, through USAID, will provide $87 million in additional humanitarian assistance for Rohingya refugees and host communities in Bangladesh, specifically in Cox’s Bazar and Bhasan Char. This additional support brings U.S. humanitarian assistance in response to the Rohingya crisis to nearly $2.4 billion since the outbreak of violence in August 2017, including nearly $1.9 billion to assist Rohingya refugees and host communities in Bangladesh.

The US is giving $45.5 million more aid for the Rohingyas who fled to Bangladesh after facing a brutal military crackdown in Myanmar's Rakhine in August 2017.

“Today the United States is contributing $45.5 million to the UN World Food Programme in support of the Rohingya refugee crisis,” Earl Robert Miller, US ambassador to Bangladesh, announced yesterday as he called on all nations with the means to contribute to this global humanitarian crisis.
