Rising COVID-19 infections in squalid refugee camps force authorities to impose lockdown

Bangladesh has sought COVID-19 vaccines and other related support for Rohingya refugees in the country from the UN and other donor agencies, said an official on Monday.

Shah Rezwan Hayat, head of the Office of the Refugee Relief and Repatriation Commissioner (RRRC), told Anadolu Agency that they have requested the UN Refugee Agency and held meetings with the World Health Organization to initiate a vaccination campaign for the refugees in the southern district of Cox's Bazar.

Foreign minister also separately proposed that Canada help vaccinating forcibly displaced Rohingyas in Bangladesh.

Bangladesh on Tuesday urged Canada to send at least two million doses of AstraZeneca Covid-19 vaccine to Bangladesh to meet immediate second dose vaccine requirements in the country.

The request was made when Canadian High Commissioner to Bangladesh Benoit Préfontaine called on Foreign Minister Dr AK Abdul Momen at the Foreign Ministry in Dhaka, a foreign ministry press release said.

YANGON, Jan 11 (Reuters) - Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi discussed closer cooperation with Myanmar and promised vaccines against COVID-19, state-run television said on Monday, after he arrived on the first stop of a five-day tour of Southeast Asia.

Wang met President Win Myint and Aung San Suu Kyi, the de facto head of the government whose National League for Democracy (NLD) was returned to power in November with a second successive landslide election victory.
