Bangladesh is facing a fallout from the Myanmar civil war. Bullets and mortar shells are crossing over the border into Bangladesh creating danger and alarm. Members of the Myanmar army, its Border Guard Police (BGP) and government officials, a few hundred in number, have fled into Bangladesh for shelter. In an interview with Prothom Alo's Partha Shankar Saha, security analyst Major General Emdadul Islam (retd) talks about the prevailing situation in Myanmar, its impact on Bangladesh, Rohingya repatriation and the role of China, India, the US and others. Maj. Gen. Emdadul Islam is the author of the book 'Rohingya: Nishango Nipirito Jatigoshti'.

Houses and refugee shelters burned by Myanmar junta troops in Nattalin, Bago region/Collected

The embattled Myanmar military, grappling with significant losses in its conflict against the Arakan Army, carried out a severe assault on Zedi Taung village - a Rohingya settlement in Buthidaung Township, Rakhine State - on December 28.

A family of six, including three children, perished in the assault on the fateful night. Only one survivor managed to escape but sustained severe injuries as their home succumbed to flames, consuming the lifeless bodies.

Over 2,000 houses destroyed by fire in Rakhine conflict

Ein Soe Pru — Nearly 2005 houses were burnt during the two-year long war in Rakhine State and Paletwa township of Chin State, said a report released by Rakhine Ethnics Congress (REC).

Some of the houses caught fire from artillery shells but most were set on fire by the troops, added the report.

The reported damaged houses belong to eight villages under Buthidaung township (163 houses), 14 villages under Kyauktaw township (1275 houses ), 9 villages under Rathedaung township (69 houses), four villages under Mrauk-U township (210 houses) and one village under Minbya township (28 houses).
