Five European nations and Canada are seeking to join a case brought by Gambia at the United Nations’ highest court accusing Myanmar of committing genocide against its Rohingya minority.


THE HAGUE, Netherlands -- Five European countries and Canada are seeking to join a case brought by Gambia at the United Nations' highest court that accuses Myanmar of committing genocide against its Rohingya minority.

The International Court of Justice said Thursday that Denmark, France, Germany, the Netherlands and the UK had joined with Canada in filing a “declaration of intervention in the case.” The Maldives filed a separate declaration.

Ahead of this month’s deadline to submit arguments and evidence to the International Court of Justice, the military regime has been using questionable methods to collect testimony from Rohingya, at times even allegedly pressuring them to change their story.
 
Ko Win Maung’s* village in Rathedaung Township, once home to a large Rohingya population, was one of the first to be attacked in 2017 during the military’s crackdown in northern Rakhine State. It was shortly after lunchtime on August 25 when soldiers arrived in Zaydipyin and began torching houses, forcing Win Maung and more than 650 other Rohingya to flee.

 Myanmar has submitted its first report to the International Court of Justice on steps it has taken to prevent the genocide of Rohingya Muslims, the U.N.'s top court said Monday.

The ICJ made a provisional order in January that majority-Buddhist Myanmar must take "all measures within its power" to stop the alleged genocide of the minority group, and that it must report to the court at regular intervals.
