 UK provides £11.6m for Rohingya refugees and communities affected by disasters across Bangladesh

This new package of UK support will provide food, water, and sanitation to Rohingya refugees, and child protection services to refugees and neighbouring host communities. It will also provide support to communities across Bangladesh affected by major natural disasters, such as floods and cyclones, if they occur.

GENEVA, 3 May 2019 – This week, UNICEF inaugurated the 2,000th learning center in the Rohingya refugee camps of Cox’s Bazar of Bangladesh. More than 180,000 children are now learning in the 2,000 UNICEF-supported learning centres, taught by 4,000 teachers who have been trained by UNICEF partners. These children are aged between 4 to 14 years.

On her first day at the refugee camps in Cox’s Bazar, Bangladesh, actress Lisa Surihani’s eyes welled up with tears.

“I couldn’t control myself,” she shares. “I didn’t want to cry but hearing their stories … listening to what the women and children had to go through to escape from the violence in Myanmar and make their way to Bangladesh … it was truly unfathomable and I was overcome with a whole gamut of emotions.

More than 145,000 Rohingya refugee children return to school

As a new school year begins, more than 145,000 Rohingya refugee children are heading back to school in Cox's Bazar, Bangladesh.

A huge effort from the humanitarian community has seen a network of around 1,600 Learning Centres constructed throughout the refugee camps, providing vital access to education for children who fled violence in Myanmar.
