US to boost ties with Bangladesh considering its geopolitical importance: FM

Bangladesh expects that the Biden Administration will strengthen Bangladesh-US relations on core issues considering Bangladesh as a very powerful country geopolitically.

"We hope the US (under the new leadership) will boost its ties with us accepting Bangladesh as a very powerful country geopolitically and as an emerging nation," Foreign Minister Dr AK Abdul Momen told reporters on Sunday.

Referring to genocide and ethnic cleansing in Myanmar, the Foreign Minister said the US will become more vocal on Rohingya issue as the US focuses on human rights issues.

Dr Momen expects positive approach from the Biden administration on climate, immigration, trade and investment issues.

Indonesian investment sought to remove trade imbalance with Bangladesh.



Bangladesh has urged Indonesia to remain pro-active in the Asean platform to convince Myanmar for creating a conducive environment for a safe, dignified and sustainable repatriation of the Rohingyas.

Foreign Minister DR AK Abdul Momen discussed the issue when Indonesian Ambassador to Bangladesh Rina Prihtyasmiarsi Soemarno met him at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Sunday.

Dr Momen suggested that an Asean-led observer team may be deployed in Rakhine State to oversee the repatriation process.

Bashan Char either could be resort or place of homeless, says FM

Floating an alternative idea for Bashan Char, an island in Noakhali district, Foreign Minister Dr AK Abdul Momen on Sunday said it could either be a resort or good place for homeless people instead of relocating Rohingyas there.

“We can think of an alternative instead of sending Rohingyas there. This is my personal thinking and there has been no decision from the government yet,” he told reporters at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Sharing his experience of recent visit to Bashan Char, Dr Momen said this is a very beautiful place having a nice lake and other facilities. “So beautiful place it is!”
