As conflict escalates in western Myanmar amid the rise of coronavirus cases in the country, there is growing concern of a deepening humanitarian crisis. As of May 26, Myanmar has recorded 206 confirmed COVID-19 cases and 6 deaths. Clashes between the Myanmar military and the Arakan Army (AA), an armed group seeking greater autonomy for ethnic Rohingya people, have displaced hundred thousand people since conflicts started over a year ago.

Outgoing UN human rights envoy for Myanmar Yanghee Lee says she believes State Counselor Aung San Suu Kyi can change after failing to live up to her reputation as a humanitarian. But that seems unlikely to happen as fighting continues in the troubled northern state of Rakhine.

Sources close to the fighting said explosions had been heard near Rathedaung, where the Myanmar military (known as Tatmadaw) was going door-to-door in three villages searching for members of the Arakan Army, which it describes as a “terrorist group.”

GENEVA, SWITZERLAND - A U.N. investigator is calling for Myanmar to be referred to the International Criminal Court and tried for alleged international crimes, including the persecution of ethnic minorities that have forced millions to flee, fearing for their lives. The investigator has submitted a report on Myanmar to the U.N. Human Rights Council.

For China, the crisis in Rakhine state isn’t a big issue

In 2019, the UN Special Rapporteur for human rights in Myanmar, Yanghee Lee, appealed to Aung San Suu Kyi to “open your eyes, listen, feel with your heart, and please use your moral authority before it is too late.”

Professor Lee was referring to a newly published report by the UN on the risk to the hundreds of thousands of Rohingya still remaining in Myanmar, who were described as being at “serious risk of genocide.” Since then, a lot of water has flown down from the rivers in Myanmar into the Bay of Bengal.

During the optimistic years that ultimately led to the National League for Democracy forming a government in 2016, the international community confirmed its faith in Myanmar's transition from military rule by lifting a succession of economic sanctions that had been imposed on the country. But there were warnings that this response came too soon.

GENEVA (17 September 2019) – A UN human rights expert has implored Myanmar’s civilian leader Aung San Suu Kyi to ‘feel with her heart before it is too late’, saying that even if refugees wished to return they have little to go back to.

Yanghee Lee, the Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Myanmar, told the Human Rights Council the situation in Myanmar was of extreme concern, and was not what she and others had hoped to see nearly four years after the election of the National League for Democracy.

“I would like to ask the State Counsellor if the Myanmar that exists today is what she had truly aspired to bring about throughout the decades of her relentless fight for a free and democratic Myanmar? I implore you Madame State Counsellor to open your eyes, listen, feel with your heart, and please use your moral authority, before it is too late.”

ပီးခဲ့တဲ့ အဂၤါေန႔က ဆြစ္ဇလန္ႏိုင္ငံ ဂ်ီနီဗာၿမိဳ႕မွာက်င္းပတဲ႔ လူ႔အခြင့္အေရးေကာင္စီ အစည္းအေ၀းမွာ ကုလသမဂၢရဲ႔ ျမန္မာနိုင္ငံဆိုင္ရာ လူ႔အခြင့္အေရး အထူးကိုယ္စားလွယ္ မစၥရန္ဟီးလီက ျမန္မာနိုင္ငံက လူ႔အခြင့္အေရးခ်ိဳးေဖါက္ မႈမ်ားကို ေထာက္ျပၿပီး၊ အျပည္ျပည္ဆိုင္ရာ ရာဇ၀တ္မႈခံုရံုး ICC ကို တင္ဖို႔ တိုက္တြန္းခဲ့ပါတယ္။ ဦးတင္ေအာင္ခိုင္ က ဆက္လက္တင္ျပပါမယ္။
