Since the overwhelming exodus of Rohingya refugees to Bangladesh in 2017, the Rohingya problem has gained attention. To continue housing more than 1.1 million refugees in Bangladesh, however, is proving to be an incredibly challenging endeavor given the recent emergence of other national and international challenges.

A ray of light is provided, nonetheless, by the recent Rohingya resolution passed by the UN General Assembly’s Third Committee. The resolution was jointly introduced on Wednesday (November 18) by members of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) and the European Union (EU), who all agreed that it was urgent to confront Myanmar’s reprehensible treatment of the Rohingya people and other minorities.

UN resolution calls for reconciliation in Myanmar

The UN Human Rights Council on Monday adopted a resolution condemning human rights violations by Myanmar’s military against the Rohingya and other minorities, and called for a process of reconciliation.

The resolution, brought forward by Pakistan on behalf of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation, was approved without a vote in the Geneva-based council.

China, one of the 47 council members, said it could not join the consensus but nonetheless did not insist on bringing the text to a vote.

Rohingya Crisis: UN adopts resolution for urgent solution

The United Nations has adopted a resolution stating that there should be an urgent solution to the Rohingya crisis to ensure safe and sustainable return of Rohingyas to their homes by creating a conducive environment inside Myanmar.

The resolution on "The situation of human rights of the Rohingya Muslims and other minorities in Myanmar" called for specific actions on part of Myanmar, such as addressing the root causes of the Rohingya crisis, including granting them citizenship, and ensuring their safe and sustainable return to their homes.
