India: Fire rips through Rohingya camp, leaving hundreds homeless

New Delhi, India – A massive fire has destroyed a Rohingya refugee camp in the Indian capital, New Delhi, leaving hundreds of people homeless.

The blaze broke out at about 11:30pm on Saturday and quickly spread through the camp, reducing 55 ramshackle shelters to ashes in the Madanpur Khadar area in the capital city’s south. No deaths or serious injuries have been reported in the fire – the second time the camp has been reduced to ashes since 2018.

A fire in the Rohingya refugee camp in southern Bangladesh has destroyed thousands of homes and killed several people, officials and witnesses have said in the wake of one of the worst blazes to hit the settlement in recent years.

While neither UN nor Bangladeshi officials engaged with the camp could confirm the number of deaths, refugees in the settlement said several had died in the fire that had torn through the Balukhali camp in Cox’s Bazar.

UN Steps Up Support For Thousands Left Homeless After Fire At Rohingya Refugee Camp

UN agencies have stepped up efforts to help thousands of Rohingya refugees left without shelter after a devastating fire tore through a crowded refugee camp in south-eastern Bangladesh on Thursday. 

WFP Bangladesh A devastating fire broke out on 14 January in Nayapara refugee camp, southern Bangladesh, destroying over 500 shelters.

 
The fire erupted shortly after midnight on Thursday (local time) in the Nayapara refugee camp in Cox’s Bazar, gutting about 550 shelters and 150 shops. A community centre is also said to have been destroyed.

About 3,500 Rohingya refugees, including children, lost their homes and belongings in the blaze, in the middle of winter and the coronavirus pandemic, UN agencies said.

No lives were lost, and the fire was brought under control in a few hours by firefighters, volunteers and refugees.

Bashan Char either could be resort or place of homeless, says FM

Floating an alternative idea for Bashan Char, an island in Noakhali district, Foreign Minister Dr AK Abdul Momen on Sunday said it could either be a resort or good place for homeless people instead of relocating Rohingyas there.

“We can think of an alternative instead of sending Rohingyas there. This is my personal thinking and there has been no decision from the government yet,” he told reporters at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Sharing his experience of recent visit to Bashan Char, Dr Momen said this is a very beautiful place having a nice lake and other facilities. “So beautiful place it is!”
