Norway's Telenor planning to exit Myanmar

The telecom giant has booked massive financial losses in a country marred by a military coup and street protests.

Norway's Telenor, a major telecom operator in Myanmar, is weighing its future in the country after booking losses following a military coup and subsequent crackdown.

The company issued a statement on Friday it following reports that it was considering the sale of its unit in the country, Telenor Myanmar.

Telenor was pushed into deep losses in the first quarter after it was forced to write down all of its assets in Myanmar, taking their value from $769 million to zero.

4 countries seek safety of Rohingyas, host communities in Cox’s Bazar

Denmark, Norway, Sweden and Switzerland today said a "safe and secure" situation in the Rohingya camps and surrounding areas in Cox's Bazar must be upheld so that Rohingyas and host communities can feel safe and protected.

Heads of Mission of Denmark, Norway, Sweden and Switzerland, in a joint press statement, laid emphasis on joint efforts by the international community to ensure repatriation of Rohingyas in "voluntary, safe, dignified and sustainable" manner.

UNDP, Norway sign $747,306 agreement

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Norwegian government yesterday signed an agreement in Dhaka, aimed at fostering peace and harmony in Rohingya camps and host communities in Cox’s Bazar.

Sidsel Bleken, Norwegian ambassador to Bangladesh, and Sudipto Mukerjee, resident representative, UNDP Bangladesh signed the agreement worth USD 747,306 at the UNDP office for 2019-2021 period.
