BANJUL (Reuters) - The genocide case brought against Myanmar at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) - the first of its kind initiated since the 1990s - may not have happened at all but for a scheduling conflict.
In May last year, Gambia’s foreign minister pulled out at the last minute from the annual conference of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) in Bangladesh, sending Justice Minister Abubacarr Tambadou instead.

The Gambia is exploiting a little-known and rarely-invoked provision of the 1948 Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide to go after the government of Myanmar.
It’s usually foreign countries that take African governments to court for committing atrocities. But the little West African nation of The Gambia turned the tables this week by charging Myanmar in the International Court of Justice (ICJ) for alleged genocide against the country’s Rohingya Muslim minority.

Rohingya issue to be taken to ICJ, Gambian minister tells PM

Visiting Gambian Foreign Minister Dr Mamadou Tangara today said they are committed to taking the Rohingya issue to the International Court of Justice (ICJ).
The Gambian Foreign Minister said this when he met Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina at her official residence Gono Bhaban in Dhaka.
PM's press secretary Ihsanul Karim briefed reporters after the meeting.
