Myanmar Rohingya: Suu Kyi rejects genocide claims at UN court - BBC News

Myanmar's leader Aung San Suu Kyi has defended her country against allegations of genocide at the UN International Court of Justice (ICJ). The Nobel Peace Prize laureate responded to widespread claims that Myanmar (formerly Burma) committed atrocities against Muslim Rohingya. In her opening remarks, she called the case against Myanmar "incomplete and incorrect". She said troubles in Rakhine, where many Rohingya lived, go back centuries.

Myanmar Rohingya: Will Omar get justice for his murdered family?


Sitting on the floor of his makeshift school in the sprawling refugee camp of Cox's Bazar in Bangladesh, 11-year-old Omar spoke softly as he remembered his mother and father.

"My parents loved me so much. They looked after me very well," he said.

He explained how his parents were murdered by the Myanmar army in August 2017. Three of his brothers and two of his sisters were also killed.

"When I wake up every morning I start crying. Then I wipe my tears away and I get ready to go to school," he said.

Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh battle monsoon landslides and floods

Thousands of people have been relocated and at least one person has died after Rohingya refugee camps in Bangladesh were battered by heavy monsoon rain.

Weather warnings suggest the downpour is likely to continue.

According to UNICEF, more than 3,000 families have been affected. The International Organization for Migration (IOM) said it had relocated thousands of refugees in recent days.

The camps house more than 700,000 Rohingya refugees.

The Rohingya are a Muslim minority group who have fled Myanmar in their hundreds of thousands, fleeing persecution.

When misinformation online leads to death threats
