US Sanctions Chinese Official for Role in Religious Persecution

The United States has sanctioned a Chinese Communist Party official for involvement "in gross violations of human rights, namely the arbitrary detention of Falun Gong practitioners for their spiritual beliefs."

The sanctions against Yu Hui, former office director of the Central Leading Group on Preventing and Dealing with Heretical Religions of Chengdu, Sichuan Province, were announced as Secretary of State Antony Blinken unveiled the State Department's annual Report on International Religious Freedom.

Yu Hui and his family are no longer allowed to enter the U.S., according to a news release.

Governments have been cracking down on religious expression more than any other time in recent memory, says a new report on global religious persecution.

The Pew Research Center’s tracking of government restrictions on religion noted a 50% increase in 2018 since the survey’s inauguration in 2007, according to the report published Tuesday.

As Rohingyas flee Myanmar, India needs to drop religious criteria in its refugee law

At the same time, the government of the prime minister of India – who is due tovisit Myanmarthis week – has announced that 40,000 Rohingya refugees are to be deported. A plea against this decision, made by two Rohingya asylum seekers in Delhi, is being reviewed by India'ssupreme court .

Authorities in northwest China’s Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region (XUAR) detained ethnic Uyghurs and other Muslim minorities in internment camps on a vast scale last year, while ramping up surveillance tactics to gain information about religion practices, the U.S. State Department said in an annual report released on Friday.
