Rohingya NGO urges UN to ensure peace for the Rohingya in Myanmar’s Rakhine

The Myanmar Ethnic Rohingya Human Rights Organisation in Malaysia (MERHROM) issued a statement 29 March urging the UN Security Council (UNSC), the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC), world leaders, and the international community to intervene immediately in order to restore peace and save the Rohingya, especially in Rakhine State.

The persecuted Muslim group made up the bulk of the death toll from Cyclone Mocha, with survivors accusing the military regime of failing to prepare adequate evacuations and issuing warnings at the last minute. 

 

When Cyclone Mocha barrelled through Rakhine State last month, Ko Tun Myint* and his family were unprepared.

“It was announced that there would be a storm, and they told us to relocate, but most of us thought Mocha wasn’t serious,” he said. “That’s why many of us stayed in the village.”

A Turkish nongovernmental organization (NGO) plans to provide humanitarian aid to the different corners of the globe during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, which starts on April 13.

The Şanlıurfa Humanitarian Aid Platform, which has been actively engaged in providing aid to the victims of the Syrian civil war for the past 10 years, is preparing to cheer up those struggling around the world.

UN and other aid agencies are concerned that the monsoon will exacerbate an already precarious situation in the Rohingya camps where almost 860,000 refugees live in overcrowded conditions, many situated in hazardous terrain.

The monsoon, with heavy rains in the past few days, brings contamination of drinking water sources and raises increased risk of water-borne disease outbreaks in the camps and adjacent Bangladeshi communities, on top of the Covid-19 pandemic, they said.

KUALA LUMPUR, April 29 — Former deputy prime minister Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail today responded to the Umno president who questioned how US$50 million (RM218million) in donations for the Rohingya community here was used.

In response to a Facebook post by Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi yesterday, Dr Wan Azizah pointed out that the Qatari donation was made out by the Qatar Charity (QC) to the NGOs involved and not through the government.

The Government of Bangladesh has barred 41 NGOs from undertaking any activity in Cox's Bazar Rohingya Camps for their alleged wrongdoings.

This was announced today by Foreign Minister Dr AK Abdul Momen in Sylhet. He said A total of 139 NGOs have been operating in the Rohingya camps since the refugee crisis began in August 2017.

Yangon: When Myanmar officials toured refugee camps in Bangladesh last month, inviting Rohingya Muslims who fled the country to return, they brought with them pamphlets adorned with cartoons showing hijab-wearing women passing through checkpoints and happily grasping identity cards.

They did not mention the new war being waged at home.

The director general of the Bureau of NGO Affairs that regulates non-government organisations in Bangladesh is waiting for the ground information to look into the possible link of NGOs with the botched attempt on Rohingya repatriation on Aug 22.

 

“I am waiting for their information on what really happened there. After getting their information, we will take the next step,” KM Abdus Salam said when asked about the matter at a dialogue in Dhaka on Tuesday.

KUTUPALONG REFUGEE CAMP, Bangladesh (Reuters) - It was after Mohib Ullah scored his first political victories that the death threats began in earnest. On a recent morning, the Rohingya refugee leaned back on a plastic chair in the Bangladesh camp where he lives, and translated the latest warning, sent over the WhatsApp messaging app.

The 44-year-old leads the largest of several community groups to emerge since more than 730,000 Rohingya Muslims fled Myanmar after a military crackdown in August 2017.
