Illegal entrant tests positive for COVID-19 in Maungdaw Twsp

One of 19 Muslims in Maungdaw Township who entered Arakan State illegally from Bangladesh was found to have been infected with coronavirus, according to a source from the Maungdaw District People’s Hospital.

The person has been identified as 36-year-old Mamat Taw Yup from the Balukhali refugee camp in Bangladesh. He tested positive for the virus on June 10, according to the medical superintendent of the Maungdaw District People’s Hospital, Dr. Nu Kay Thi San.

Buthidaung, the town in the westernmost part of the country, has been provided electricity through national power grid for twenty-four hours starting on 30 October, according to the inhabitants. The 24-hour electric power-supplies start delivering to wards in the Buthidaung township since in the evening of 30 October, as said by U Moe Thyra who is the township electrical engineer.

Myanmar authorities seized more than 10 million meth pills worth $13.3 million over the weekend, police said Monday, another massive haul in a country widely believed to be the world's largest methamphetamine producer.

High-grade crystal meth -- or 'ice' -- is smuggled out of Myanmar via sophisticated networks to lucrative developed markets as far away as Japan, South Korea and Australia.

Freedom of movement is important to rebuild trust in Rakhine State, Christine Schraner Burgener, the United Nations’ special envoy on human rights in Myanmar, said in a statement at the end of her 12-day visit to Myanmar yesterday.

“Freedom of movement is crucial for all people and their access to livelihoods. Without freedom of movement, children cannot go to local schools, and people still cannot access hospitals. It is important to rebuild trust,” Burgener said.

The foreign ministry has summoned the Myanmar ambassador in Dhaka to protest “fabricated and baseless” statement that Bangladeshis were involved in a terrorist attack on a police post at Maungdaw Township near the border.

 

Lwin Oo met Md Delwar Hossain, director general of the foreign ministry’s Southeast Asia wing, on Tuesday afternoon. The envoy was asked to explain “irresponsible and false” allegations by the officials of the General Administration Department of Myanmar implicating Bangladesh in the attack.

YANGON — Three officers were wounded by artillery shells in a two-hour assault on a police post in northern Rakhine State’s Maungdaw Township Thursday morning by the Arakan Rohingya Salvation Army (ARSA), according to the General Administration Department (GAD).

Development to continue in Rakhine economic zones

The Rakhine State government is moving ahead with economic development plans for the northern part of the state.

State official say the plans will involve the Kanyin Chaung Economic Zone, Pone Nar Kyun Industrial Zone and livestock and agriculture zones in northern Rakhine.

The UN’s human rights expert on Myanmar has expressed alarm at the escalating violence in northern and central Rakhine State and Chin State, and called on all sides to exercise restraints in use of force and to ensure the protection of civilians.

Since November 2018 the Myanmar military, known as the Tatmadaw, and Arakan Army (AA), an ethnic armed organisation, have been engaged in heavy fighting, resulting in deaths and injuries to civilians. At least 5,000 people have been displaced from their homes.
