Dhaka agrees to combat drugs, terrorism at border.

Myanmar and Bangladesh will cooperate to combat narcotics and terrorists along their border, according to a joint statement issued after the sixth Myanmar-Bangladesh border guard forces meeting in Nay Pyi Taw on Tuesday.

“Matters of mutual benefit were discussed at the meeting, and both sides agreed to cooperate in those sectors,” said police Brigadier General Myo Than, who led the Myanmar delegation at the meeting a day earlier.

Human Rights Watch on Tuesday called on Bangladesh to offer Rohingya refugees formal secondary education, saying school officials in the southeast had expelled scores of Rohingya children because they lacked citizenship papers although they were born inside the country.

A humanitarian crisis that has been brewing at the border between Myanmar and Bangladesh since 2016 is reaching a critical point. At Cox's Bazar, just inside Bangladesh, an estimated 740,000 displaced Muslim Rohingya from Myanmar's Rakhine State are encamped in temporary shelters, hoping that the international community will take them in as refugees or facilitate their safe return to the homes they claim in Myanmar.

          Eight of the 38 Buddhist families from Myanmar, who took refuge at the border with Bangladesh a week ago, have returned home

The 28 people returned on Sunday and the others also said they would return gradually, Colonel Zahirul Haque, commander of Border Guard Bangladesh or BGB in Bandarban, told bdnews24.com.
