As the country continues to get pilloried in the international community because of the still unresolved humanitarian crisis in northern Rakhine State, US companies are exploring opportunities in the country amid efforts to open up some sectors such as banking, finance and education.

US Ambassador to Myanmar Scot Marciel met recently with representatives of the Union of Myanmar Federation of Chambers Commerce and Industry to discuss and explore opportunities available for US businesses.

Policy reforms depend on good implementation, UMFCCI says.

Myanmar’s largest business lobby group suggested that the government should focus on improving policy implementation and that further liberalisation is necessary for attracting investments.

Myanmar Government officials and businesses have requested the European Union (EU) to reconsider the potential move to withdraw its generalised scheme of preferences (GSP) benefit from the country fearing negative impacts on growth and population. Both feel the move will result in high levels of unemployment resulting from migration of foreign business houses.
