Facebook executive who shared anti-Muslim post apologises: Report

A Facebook India executive has apologised to Muslim staff for sharing a post that dubbed Muslims in India a "degenerate community", according to a report by BuzzFeed News.

The post, originally written by a police officer last year in response to nationwide protests against a new citizenship law, said for Muslims, "nothing except purity of religion and implementation of Shariah matter".

Facebook in India Is Drowning in Anti-Muslim Hate Speech

At the end of February, Facebook launched an ad campaign in the Indian state of Maharashtra that was designed to inform users about resources available to protect against harassment and hate speech.

But instead of informing the public, it enraged them.

Facebook’s mistake: portraying a troll as a member of the lower Dalit caste, an oversight that essentially reinforced ugly stereotypes against the very group that is most discriminated against on its platform. Hundreds of users reported the ad as hate speech, and within a day the ad was removed. But the incident symbolized Facebook’s mounting failures in its biggest market, particularly when it comes to the spread of harassment and hate speech.

3-day conference on anti-Muslim racism kicks off in Istanbul


The second edition of the international conference on Islamophobia kicked off in Istanbul on Friday.

Featuring scholars from Turkey and abroad, the conference organized by the Center for Islam and Global Affairs (CIGA) at Istanbul Sabahattin Zaim University (IZU) focused on "Islamophobia's role in different contexts, and its discourse and geopolitics."

In his opening speech, IZU rector Mehmet Bulut said anti-Muslim racism threatens human rights "in grave and unconscionable ways."
