Myanmar team returns sans reaching agreement

The delegation from the Myanmar Immigration Department returned to Myanmar on Wednesday without reaching any agreement on the Rohingya repatriation agenda.

"They returned to Myanmar via Jaliapara Jetty Ghat in Teknaf, Cox's Bazar, around 10.30am on Wednesday. The Myanmar delegation has collected details of 499 Rohingyas from 149 families during their visit. They met with the enlisted Rohingyas at Teknaf Shal Port and recorded their statements," Refugee, Relief and Repatriation Commission (RRRC) officials said.

Officials from Myanmar’s immigration and population ministries left Bangladesh on Wednesday after interviewing around 480 Rohingya in Cox’s Bazar as part of a plan for possible repatriation to their country.

The 17-member Myanmar delegation, led by Aung Myo, the social welfare minister for Rakhine State, started interviewing Rohingyas, who are currently living in Cox’s Bazar camps, on March 15.

A delegation from Myanmar is visiting Rohingya refugee camps in Bangladesh this week to verify a few hundred potential returnees for a pilot repatriation project.

A Bangladeshi official said on Wednesday it was unclear when the mainly Muslim refugees would be going home.

Myanmar team visits Rohingya camps in Cox’s Bazar

A nine-member Myanmar delegation visited Rohingya camp in Cox's Bazar on Wednesday and interacted with Rohingyas in an effort to convince them to return to their homes in Rakhine state, reports UNB. 

They will talk to Rohingyas at the camp on Thursday before they leave Cox's Bazar for Dhaka in the afternoon, an official told UNB.
