Photography competition documents Rohingya life through their own eyes

Held over a period of four months, the Rohingya Photography Competition will end with a Facebook live program on December 5, where winners of the competition will be announced.

Organized by the UK-based documentary filmmaker and journalist Shafiur Rahman, the worldwide photography competition for Rohingya ended on August 25, a date marked as ‘Genocide Day’ by the Rohingya refugees.

Yangon, Myanmar – On November 8, the National League for Democracy won another resounding victory in Myanmar’s national election, claiming 920 of the 1,117 seats available in the local and national parliaments and improving on its 2015 landslide.

The election was marred by some significant shortcomings – mainly the exclusion of the Rohingya Muslim majority and widespread vote cancellations in Rakhine – but was free of any serious irregularities and widely seen as reflecting the NLD’s continued overwhelming popularity.

The two day 47th session of 57-member Organization of Islamic Cooperation's (OIC's) Council of Foreign Ministers (CFM) meeting began in Niamey, Niger today emphasising on the unity of Muslim world in addressing Islamophobia for peace and development.

Niger President Mahamadou Issouifou inaugurated the OIC's foreign ministers' meet while OIC Secretary General Dr Yousef Al-Othaimeen addressed the opening ceremony held at Mahatma Gandhi International Conference Centre in the Niger capital.

In two days, the foreign ministers of OIC countries will discuss wide range of issues specially the situation of Muslim minorities and communities in non-member states that includes crisis of Myanmar origin Rohingya Muslims, who have been forcibly displaced to Bangladesh following a military crackdown in Rakhine three years back.

Rima Sultana Rimu, one of the two Bangladeshi women named in the list of 100 inspiring and influential women from around the world for 2020 revealed by the BBC, is a local role model.

Daughter of a farmer from Razarkul union in Ramu upazila, Rimu overcame all the odds to complete her education. Now, being an active member of 'Young Women Leaders for Peace' in Cox's Bazar that works for the empowerment of young women from conflict zones, she is making contributions to society.

Swiss Ambassador to Bangladesh Nathalie Chuard has said there is growing global expectation to address the root causes of the Rohingya crisis and prepare the ground for the sustainable return of Rohingya refugees to their place of origin in Myanmar.

However, Ambassador Chuard also said the conditions required for a sustainable, voluntary, safe and dignified return are not there yet.

ရခိုင်ပြည်နယ်အတွက် လွတ်လပ်သောစုံစမ်းစစ်ဆေးရေးကော်မရှင် (ICOE)ရဲ့ အစီရင်ခံစာပါ ဖြစ် စဉ် ၁၃ ခုနဲ့ ပတ်သက်လို့ ရခိုင်ပြည်နယ်ထဲမှာ ARSA နဲ့ အလိုတူပူးပေါင်းပါဝင်သူတွေ၊နယ်ခြားစောင့် ရဲတပ်ဖွဲ့ဝင်တွေနဲ့ ဒေသခံတိုင်းရင်းသားတွေ ကျူးလွန်ခဲ့တဲ့ အမှုပေါင်း ၁၃၉ မှု ရှိပြီး ၁၁၀ မှုကိုအရေး ယူထားတယ်လို့ ပြည်ထောင်စုရှေ့နေချုပ်ရုံးက နိုဝင်ဘာ ၂၃ ရက်နေ့မှာပဲ ထုတ်ပြန်ထားပါတယ်။

ICJ တရားရုံးက ကြားဖြတ်အစီအမံအမိန့်ချပြီးကတည်းက မြန်မာအနေနဲ့ ခွဲခြားနှိမ်ချမှုတွေရဲ့ အခြေ ခံအကြောင်းတရားတွေကိုဘာမှ အရေးယူဆောင်ရွက်တာမရှိသလို အပြစ်ကျူးလွန်သူတွေ ဒဏ် ခတ် မခံရတဲ့အတွက် ရိုဟင်ဂျာတွေအပေါ် လူမျိုးတုံးသတ်ဖြတ်မှုအန္တရာယ်ဆက်ရှိနေတယ်လို့ ဂရန့်ရှူဘင်က ပြောပါတယ်။

ဂမ်ဘီယာနိုင်ငံက တရားစွဲထားတဲ့ ဒီအမှုနဲ့ ပတ်သက်လို့ မြန်မာအစိုးရအနေနဲ့လိုက်နာဆောင်ရွက်ဖို့ ပြီးခဲ့တဲ့ ဇန်နဝါရီ ၂၃ ရက်နေ့မှာ ICJ တရားရုံးက ကြားဖြတ်အစီအမံ ၄ ချက် ချမှတ်ခဲ့ပါတယ်။

All over the world, we are witnessing rising levels of violent hate crime inspired by religious ideology for which there seems to be no lasting and sustainable solutions.

For example, India is now one of the top five countries in the world known for physical hostility against religious minorities, according to Pew Research.

For a start, the call should be to increase awareness of the phenomenon, as well as cultivate a sense of empathy with victims of religious violence and persecuted minorities who are not our co-religionists or compatriots.

GUWAHATI: A complaint lodged by a train passenger with a toll-free number led railway officials to 14 suspected Rohingya refugees.

The persons, arrested from a train at New Jalpaiguri station of the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR), had apparently fled a refugee camp in Bangladesh. They had boarded the train in Assam’s Badarpur.

Foreign ministers of Organisation of Islamic Cooperation countries are set to meet together in Niger today while the Rohingya genocide case with the International Court of Justice is expected to come up among the top agendas.

OIC secretary general Yousef Al-Othaimeen said in a statement that the council of foreign ministers would discuss how to raise funds for the Rohingya case at the ICJ in addition to other issues concerning the Muslim world like Palestinian cause, fight against violence, extremism and terrorism, Islamophobia and religious defamation.

Myanmar ignoring Rohingya genocide trial measures, say activists

Human rights lawyers and activists said on Monday (23) that Myanmar is continuing to commit genocide against Rohingya Muslims in breach of orders by the UN’s top court.

The International Court of Justice (ICJ) in January rejected arguments made personally by Myanmar’s civilian leader Aung San Suu Kyi in The Hague and imposed urgent interim measures on the predominantly Buddhist nation.

Foreign ministers of Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) countries are set to meet together on Friday while the Rohingya genocide case with the International Court of Justice (ICJ) is expected to come up among the top agendas.

OIC Secretary General Dr Yousef Al-Othaimeen said in a statement that the CMF would discuss how to raise funds for the Rohingya case at the ICJ in addition to other issues concerning the Muslim world like Palestinian cause, fight against violence, extremism and terrorism, Islamophobia and religious defamation.
