US Congressman Eliot Engel has appreciated the government of Bangladesh for hosting the persecuted Rohingyas from Myanmar, and also expressed his hope to visit Bangladesh, see the Rohingya camps and hold talks with various stakeholders.

Engel, also the chairman of US House Foreign Affairs Committee, told this to Bangladesh Foreign Secretary Md Shahidul Haque when the latter met the Congressman at the Hill in Washington DC on January 24, according to a press release issued by Bangladesh Embassy in Washington DC.

SITTWE—A resident of Pann Myaung village in Rakhine State’s Minbya Township was shot dead in front of his house on Wednesday evening, according to township police.

U Maung Aye Thein, 56, was shot five times at close range at around 9 p.m., Police Captain Mya Zaw told The Irrawaddy.

Last October, Zakir Hossain was getting a haircut at a saloon in the southern Indian city of Hyderabad when the TV inside the shop flashed a report on India deporting seven Rohingya refugees back to Myanmar.

"That was the last straw. The prospect of being deported to Myanmar was terrifying," said 25-year-old Hossain, who along with his family had taken an arduous trip to Hyderabad from Myanmar's restive Rakhine State in 2014.
