Myanmar is preparing to hold general elections this Sunday, an occasion that might have marked a significant milestone in its ongoing transition from decades of military rule. The previous polls, in 2015, saw Aung San Suu Kyi’s National League for Democracy finally win the presidency and a majority of seats in parliament, following the dissolution of the military junta in 2011. Hopes were high that Suu Kyi, who is now Myanmar’s de facto leader, would usher in a new era of peace and expanded freedoms. Yet the consensus today is that Myanmar’s democratic transition has stalled—if it can even be said to be transitioning at all.

While UK aid is doing tremendous good abroad, refugee policies at home need work.

In recent months, there have been UK government proposals to build a floating wall in the English Channel to keep out migrant dinghies, install water cannons that create waves to push away refugee boats, and create offshore detention camps on islands thousands of miles away.

The UK has hardly thrown its arms open to refugees in 2020. Indeed, asylum seekers are perhaps more likely to be met with war ships than welcome banners. It’s led to Global Citizen launching a campaign urging people to write to their MP, asking them to offer safe passage.

The hate-preaching monk Wirathu has made his first court appearance after handing himself in to police on Monday almost a year and a half after going on the run to avoid a charge of sedition.

The monk appeared via video link - a measure aimed at preventing the spread of Covid-19 - to be officially remanded in custody by the Yangon Western District Court, which set the next hearing for November 17.

Tens of thousands of Rohingya refugees have fled Myanmar for Bangladesh 

After fleeing a brutal crackdown which left thousands dead in their homeland of Myanmar, the Rohingya are once again under threat.

In Cox's Bazar, the massive refugee camp in Bangladesh to which many of the Rohingya refugees fled, violence and drug and human trafficking are on the rise. The Bangladeshi government has begun relocating hundreds of the refugees, against their will, to the small remote silt island of Bhasan Char.

YANGON -- Anger and despair is spreading among the Rohingya in Myanmar before the country's general election on Nov. 8 as many in the Muslim group have had their citizenship stripped and are barred from voting or running for parliament.

Tayub Uddin, 65, is a Rohingya politician in Yangon and serves as a senior vice chairman of the Democracy and Human Rights Party, a Rohingya political party. While he is actively participating in politics, his family members in Rakhine State, located on the country's western coast and home to many Rohingya, are not recognized as citizens.

Treaty Banning Nuclear Weapons to Enter into Force in January

The Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons will enter into force on Jan. 22, 2021. Honduras became the 50th country to ratify the treaty on Oct. 24, triggering the treaty’s entry into force after a 90-day period. United Nations (U.N.) Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said that the treaty was the “culmination of a worldwide movement to draw attention to the catastrophic humanitarian consequences of any use of nuclear weapons. It represents a meaningful commitment towards the total elimination of nuclear weapons, which remains the highest disarmament priority of the United Nations.” The treaty bans the testing, production, manufacturing, and possession of nuclear weapons.

ေနရပ္စြန႔္ခြာထြက္ေျပးရၿပီး ဘဂၤလားေဒ့ရွ္မွာ ေနထိုင္ေနရတဲ့ ႐ိုဟင္ဂ်ာေတြကို ျပန္လည္ေခၚယူဖို႔အတြက္ ျမန္မာႏိုင္ငံက ဆႏၵရွိေၾကာင္း တ႐ုတ္ႏိုင္ငံက ဘဂၤလားေဒ့ရွ္ကို သတင္းစကား ပါးခဲ့ပါတယ္။

တ႐ုတ္ႏိုင္ငံျခားေရးဝန္ႀကီး ဝမ္ယီနဲ႔ ဘဂၤလားေဒ့ရွ္ႏိုင္ငံျခားေရးဝန္ႀကီး ေအေက အဘ္ဒူလ္ မိုမန္တို႔ ၾကာသာ ပေတးေန႔ညက ေတြ႕ဆုံစဥ္မွာ ဒီလိုေျပာခဲ့တာလို႔ ဘဂၤလားေဒ့ရွ္ဝန္ႀကီးဌာနရဲ႕ ေသာၾကာေန႔ကထုတ္ျပန္တဲ့ ေၾကျငာခ်က္မွာ ေဖာ္ျပထားပါတယ္။
