(CNN)Dozens of Rohingya refugees stranded at sea for weeks are being quarantined for coronavirus on a remote island in the Bay of Bengal after docking in Bangladesh on Saturday.

The 29 refugees, mostly women and children, were taken to the cyclone-prone island Bhashan Char -- also known as Thengar Char -- in order to protect the sprawling refugee camps of Cox's Bazar from the spread of Covid-19, Bangladesh Naval Lieutenant Abdur Rashid told CNN.

A global human rights watchdog on Tuesday voiced concerns over safety of 29 Rohingya refugees, who have been quarantined at a remote island by Bangladeshi authorities.

“Bangladesh authorities have quarantined 29 Rohingya refugees without adequate access to aid on an unstable silt island in the Bay of Bengal,” Human Rights Watch (HRW) said in a statement on Tuesday.

Bangladesh finally could send few Rohingyas to Bhasan Char.
The government developed the river island at the estuary of Meghna River for human habitation with all the facilities, but due to international pressure could not relocate Rohingyas from Cox’s Bazar to Bhasan Char.

In a new move, the government sent few Rohingyas who entered Bangladesh in the last couple of days by using small boats to Bhasan Char.

At least 29 Rohingyas, who had been in one of the two boats floating on the Indian Ocean, were sheltered at the Bhashan Char after they reached the shore of Teknaf early Saturday.

"The 29 Rohingyas were taken to Bhashan Char under the supervision of the Navy," Mahbub Alam Talukder, Refugee Relief and Repatriation Commissioner (RRRC), told The Daily Star yesterday.

Foreign Minister AK Abdul Momen said the Rohingyas took small boats and swam to the coast of Teknaf. Some of them even fled when locals were rescuing them, he said.

In 2017, when the genocidal campaign in Myanmar forced the Rohingya across the border and into Bangladesh, we came seeking refuge and safety. The country opened its borders and its hearts to almost 800,000 Rohingya and we were grateful.
