What was the outcome of the meeting with the Thai government on the Rohingya crisis?

I was very happy to meet with the [Thai] foreign affairs committee. I am looking forward to meeting with the chairman of the Senate and the parliament speaker. I am happy that they have a good understanding of the Rohingya issue. I know that Thailand had the same experience more than 30 years ago, when people from Myanmar took shelter in Thailand. You have been housing them for 35 years. Thailand understands what Bangladesh is facing.

Such blatant discrimination is wholly archaic for any modern nation

Despite multiple attempts by Bangladesh and the international community, Myanmar has remained passive about ensuring that the repatriation process for the Rohingya can actually begin.

A commendable plea was made by the UN Secretary-General to the Myanmar government recently, in which he requested the state to ensure that the voluntary return of the Rohingya becomes a reality.

In the op-ed, “Bangladesh Papering Over The Cracks At Home And Abroad,” (Nov. 1) writer Chloe Durham makes factual errors regarding Bangladesh’s 2018 election and mischaracterizes elements of Bangladesh’s civil society and media freedoms.

Contrary to Ms. Durham’s claim, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s Awami League did not win “96% of the vote.” Rather, the Awami League received 76% of the vote cast. A simple Google search would have saved Ms. Durham from this mistake.

Amnesty International is deeply concerned about what appears to be a series of recent extrajudicial executions of Rohingya refugees in Cox’s Bazaar refugee camps. Since the killing on 23 August 2019, of a local Bangladeshi youth leader from the ruling political party Awami League, at least seven Rohingya refugees have been killed by Bangladesh police in alleged ‘gunfights’ in the span of just three weeks. Bangladesh authorities must respect and protect the human rights of Rohingya, including the right to freedom of peaceful assembly, expression and movement, as well as their other rights as refugees.

Hundreds of thousands of Rohingya refugees fled Myanmar for Bangladesh

The head of the UN has called on Myanmar to take responsibility for hundreds of thousands of Rohingya Muslim refugees and work towards their safe return to the country from Bangladesh.

A wave of refugees began fleeing Myanmar in late August after its response to an attack by Rohingya militants on more than 20 police posts that the government said left 12 members of the security forces dead.
