YANGON (Reuters) - One rescue worker was killed and several others were wounded when an ambulance came under fire in northern Myanmar amid clashes between troops and ethnic rebels in the region, an army spokesman and a witness said on Saturday.

The rescue workers were 13 miles from Lashio, the largest town in Shan State, where ethnic armed groups have been fighting for greater autonomy from the central government, when their convoy came under attack.

CHIANG MAI, Thailand and DHAKA, Bangladesh—Myanmar has long been ready to accept the repatriation of displaced people who fled from Rakhine State to Bangladesh, in line with the agreement reached by the two countries, the Ministry of Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement said.

Some 3,450 people out of a total of 55,511 who completed verification forms have been cleared to return, according to U Zaw Htay, the President’s Office spokesman.

Bangladesh and Myanmar said Friday they were working on the first repatriation of Rohingya refugees since members of the ethnic minority fled a massive military crackdown in Rakhine state two years ago, amid confusion over how the process would unfold.

The Arakan Army (AA) issued a statement against the Myanmar Police on August 12 warning its officers to stop arresting and torturing Arakan people by misusing their authority. The letter also warned the police force not to frighten people or disturb Arakan national activities.

The AA released a similar warning to police on February 8, 2019.
